West Carrollton City is a city in the eastern part of Ohio, United States. The population was 15,636 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Montgomery County. The area now known as West Carrollton City was first settled by families from Pennsylvania in 1788 and was established as a village in 1802. The name "Carrollton" was given to it by General John Forbes during the War of 1812 for his service in that country and for his role in driving off British forces from the town of Steubenville, Ohio. In 1814, the village became a town and was renamed Carroll Township after Colonel James Cranch, one of its founders. The township changed its name again to West Carrollton Township on October 16, 1868 when it joined Montgomery County. On December 3, 1907, West Carrollton City merged with neighboring Bedford Township to form what is now called West Carrollton City/Bedford Township. In 1870–71, contributions were made by Wm Denton and others to create a public school system within present-day Bedford Township which would serve all residents of both townships; this effort failed because no donations could be raised quickly enough to cover costs associated with building new schools. A second attempt was made in 1875 when $5 thousand dollars was donated by Jno Fenton but again no money came through fast enough so construction began only on two buildings: a gymnasium and an elementary school then known as Peters School House No 2 which still stands today near US 21 southbound exit 9A (now I-675). In 1915 another donation arrived from Leland Hines who offered land along US 21 northbound for an Agricultural School District No 70; this institution also exists today as North Park Academy where students come from grades Pre-K through 12th grade. Although these schools did not have high enrollments they provided education for many residents until after World War II when more children moved into the area or were born there during that time period such as teachers Mrs John Biddleman Mr Edward Boyle Sr High School football coach Gene Keady MiddleSchool Baseball Coach Tom McMahon Jr All Area Teachers Association meeting held on September 23rd 1976 voted unanimously to request approval for annexation into neighboring Bedford Township which finally happened on December 3rd 1977 making West Carrollton City/Bedford Township one community united under one roof West Carrollton City has experienced rapid growth over the past few decades due largely to commuting opportunities available via Interstate 765 (I-675) and Ulysses S Grant Boulevard (US 21 northbound). East Side Drive access has also led to development including several apartment complexes housing up to 1,000 apartments each; additional development is planned or ongoing across I-675 just west of I-675's interchange with US 21 southbound approaching Warsaw Road In addition hotel space continues to be developed recently including Hilton Garden Inn & Suites at Ross Road Crossing while Advanstar Rail Station will soon become home to four Marriott hotels There are numerous religious institutions located within walking distance including St Timothy’s Episcopal Church located adjacent to Fordham University while Holy Cross Catholic Church can be found just east of I-675’s interchange with US 421 Sporting events regularly take place at local venues such as Penn Athletic Fields near SouthPark Mall while regional tournaments are hosted annually at White Water Raising Stadium southeast of downtown

West Carrollton City was founded in 1834 by John A. West, a landowner and surveyor. The city was named for John Carroll, the president of the United States from 1800 to 1821. When Ohio became a state in 1802, West Carrollton became part of what is now Lucas County. By 1830, there were only about 10 residents in West Carrollton City. However, by 1840, the population had grown to 100 people and by 1860 it had reached 300 people. In 1870, the city had become an incorporated town with its own government and School District. It remained an incorporated town until 1974 when it became a unincorporated community again. In that year, the school district changed its name to Cleveland-West Carrollton Township Schools Inc.- which remains its current name today.
