West Carrollton was founded by pioneers in 1810 as part of what would become the Northwest Territory. It was named for General John Carrol West, who had served with distinction in the American Revolution and during Mexican War. In 1824, West Carrollton became a town within the newly formed Summit County. The original courthouse building still stands and is used as a museum today. The city experienced rapid growth following World War II when thousands of servicemen came to live and work here. Today, East Carrollton remains its largest economic engine with many businesses based there that support local commerce and services such as law enforcement, education, health care, manufacturing and agriculture.

West Carrollton City was founded in 1832 as a small town on the west side of the Cuyahoga River. The community quickly grew, and by 1839 it had become an incorporated village. By 1860, West Carrollton had a population of 2,500 residents and was one of the largest towns in Ohio. In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln ordered General George McClellan to march his army through Cleveland to attack the Confederate forces at Fort Sumter. After months of planning and preparation, McClellan's army arrived in Cleveland on April 12th, 1862. The battle that followed is known as "The Battle of Center Point". It resulted in Confederate victory and ended the Civil War in Ohio. After the Civil War ended, West Carrollton City began to decline. Many people left for various reasons (including slavery), while others moved away because they could not afford to live there. In 1870, only 400 residents remained in West Carrollton City; by 1890, it had only 200 residents remaining. However, due to its location on the main east-west road between Cleveland and Cincinnati (the Erie Canal) and its close proximity to both cities (it was just one mile from downtown Cincinnati), West Carrollton continued to be very popular among locals and visitors alike for many years afterwards. In 1932, when Ohio passed its statehood laws, West Carrollton became part of new Ohio State University; however, due to its small size – it had no city hall or other municipal facilities – it did not enjoy much political or economic stability until after World War II when it slowly regained some success as a commercial center thanks largely to its friendship with Cincinnati!
West Carrollton City was founded in 1810 by General Israel Putnam and his wife, Susanna. The town became a part of the United States in 1814. In 1870, the city was named for Major General James Carroll who fought in the American Revolution.
