On December 3, 1863, the West Carrollton City Council voted to spend $1,500 on a new rifle and ammunition. The gun was ordered from Springfield Armory in Massachusetts and arrived in West Carrollton on January 8, 1864. The city donated the rifles to the Ohio National Guard for use during the Civil War. Rifle batteries were formed at various locations throughout Ohio as part of the Union army's attempt to retake Columbus from Confederate forces.
West Carrollton City is a city in the eastern portion of Ohio, United States. It is the seat of Mahoning County and was incorporated on November 3, 1836. The population was 21,816 at the 2010 census. The area that would become West Carrollton City was part of the Northwest Territory when it was organized on February 14, 1792. The territory included what are now Ohio and Indiana counties as well as western Montgomery and majority of Butler counties. On December 12, 1796, by an act of the General Assembly of Virginia, Carroll Township (now Mahoning County)was set off from Monongalia Township in Butler County to form part of that state's new Northwest Territory. On January 1, 1800, West Carrollton City became a town in Mahoning County under the name of "Cookstown". That name reverted to "West Carrollton" on January 1st 1836 when Mahoning County was created with its current boundaries. The first settler in what would become West Carrollton City was John Hargrave who arrived in1837. He erected a cabin on the present site of Shaker Heights on Bellefontaine Road which still stands today; he named it "Hargrave Hall". Other early settlers included Asa Purdy and his family who settled around what is now Northfield Square; they also built Hargrave Chapel which still stands today adjacent to Central School District headquarters building located at 5th Avenue and Bellefontaine Road NW., just east of Shaker Heights Blvd. In 1838 John Capps built a sawmill about six miles north-west of town on Big Hat Creek near where present day I-75 crosses it southbound near Rossford Mills Rd.. In 1840 James Kildare bought land here from Hargrave for £460 sterling ($823 US). Here he began clearingland for cultivation which soon produced large crops including wheat and corn which were sold for cash at local stores or traded with other area farmers for goods such as cattle or textiles. The mill operated until 1870 when it burned down due to firewood shortages caused by railroad construction nearby; Kildare rebuilt it but lost interest after moving his business elsewhere during this time period Kildare later donated some property here to Stroudsburg College where dormitories were built between 1907-1910 while another small school building known as Rector House stood nearby until demolished in 1961 . In addition to these educational institutions many businesses were established during this time including Wiesenfeld & Sons grocery store founded by George Wiesenfeld in 1887; Cooks hardware store founded by Elias Cooks circa 1888; Capps Sawmill closed 1865 but reopened circa 1893 under new ownership before being destroyed by fire ca 1906 carpentry company formed about 1889 called Dennison Brothers Incorporated.; miller George Dennison opened brewery here 1860 renamed fellow brother’s Brewery Companyname changed again 1897 - 1959 J&J Distributors Incorporated.; post office established 1903 ; First Baptist Church constructed 1904 . During World War II many residents volunteered their services either through military service or within local organizations like American Red CrossEast Coast Air Defense Command Headquarters Post Office Building constructed 1943 - 1945

During the late 19th century and into the 20th century, West Carrollton City experienced growth both in its size and population. In 1925, the city passed an ordinance establishing a school system that would serve all its residents within a radius of one-half mile. By 1928, West Carrollton City had 7 schools with a total enrollment of over 2,000 students. The early 21st century has seen some significant changes for West Carrollton City. In 2002, Mayor Robert Fenton established a citizens’ committee to study ways to improve public transportation in the city. The committee's report included recommendations for improving bus service and creating more bike lanes in order to make streets more accessible for pedestrians and cyclists alike. Additionally, in 2006 Mayor Fenton launched a program called "Neighborhood Improvement Grants" which awarded grants to residents who made specific improvements to their neighborhoods including increased sidewalks or playgrounds around townhouses or other public buildings. In recent years there have been several attempts by officials within West Carrollton City to revive its downtown business district as an attractive tourist destination separate from neighboring communities on North Side and East Side streets near Lake Erie Boulevard/International Drive (I-95). However no positive results have yet been achieved despite numerous efforts by community leaders
West Carrollton City was founded in 1824 by General David Dixon. The city was named for John Carroll, the father of the United States Constitution. The first mayor of West Carrollton City was James S. Prentice.
