Washington Court House is an old building in downtown Cincinnati that has been a coffee shop and roasting house since the 1870s. The first coffee shop in Cincinnati was opened by David Brown in 1871, and it was located on Third Street. In 1907, Judge James J. Crandall opened the first café in Cincinnati and he also started serving coffee from his courtroom window. There were many other businesses that served coffee at this time, but Washington Court House became known as the birthplace of American Coffee Roasters (ACR). The ACR started roasted beans from Elevated Grounds, which was a small business on Vine Street near Fifth Avenue. Joe Biden began working for Elevated Grounds when he was just 17 years old and he started roasting beans for Well-Tempered Coffee Company (WTC) later that year. WTC was founded by two friends who wanted to create a sweet, smooth cup of coffee that would be enjoyed by everyone. They purchased a major share of Elevated Grounds and continued to roast their own beans until they merged with Crandall’s Café Corporation in 1962 to become American Coffee Roasters (ACR). The first Starbucks opened up in Seattle in 1976, but it wasn’t until 1990 that the first store inside of Cincinnati opened its door – Washington Court House!
