It served as the seat of government for the county of Washington until it was moved to Cincinnati in 1853. The court house remained a functioning court and law center until it was destroyed by fire in 1907. It has been rebuilt several times since then, most recently in 1951. The Washington Court House is one of two remaining original brick buildings from the early 19th century on Main Street in downtown Cincinnati. The other is the Federal Building, which also served as the city hall from 1813 to 1957. Both buildings are significant examples of Queen Anne architecture and were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
