The Warrensville Heights Naval Militia detachment has been a part of the American military since the early 1800s. The first naval militia in Warrensville Heights was organized on December 1, 1814 when seven men from Portsmouth, New Hampshire were called to duty in support of the First Seminole War. In 1861, the Navy Department activated a navy reserve detachment to serve as guard for the Ohio River. The detachment was composed of naval reservists from all over Ohio and Indiana. On November 15, 1862, Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry's forces invaded Indiana and in response Commodore John D. Stockton's squadron joined General Ulysses S. Grant's army at Vincennes Army Depot northwest of Indianapolis. Admiral David Dixon Porter ordered Captain Price to clear Chippewa Lake before supplies could be landed there and he sailed his squadron upriver on November 17th with orders to land at Korkc Island near present dayWarrensville Heights where they would rendezvous with Rear Admiral Gideon Welles's fleet under Flag Officer George Dewey as we advanced against Fort Harrison). After landing their supplies they made camp that night within rifle range of Fort Harrison; but no action took place because it was snowing heavily that night. On December 2nd Commodore Porter ordered a force consisting of three ships (USS Constitution (1863), USS Monitor (1864) and USS Hannibal (1865)), four frigates and two transports off Korkc Island to attack Fort Harrison which had been taken by surprise during the winter storm that had swept across eastern Michigan late November/early December 1864. The fortifications were manned only by fifty-six soldiers who were easily overwhelmed by such an overwhelming force led by one man - Commodore Porter himself! A fierce fight ensued until morning when artillery fire silenced all remaining opposition and HMS Hannibal evacuated her sick and wounded while USS Constitution captured two cannons and six muskets from Fort Harrison after a successful boarding action resulting in five dead Americans including Commodore Porter himself! Aftermath: After taking Fort Harrison commodore Porter turned his attention back upstream towards Vincennes where he rejoined General Ulysses S Grant's army on December 10th following their victory at Wilson’s Creek Bridge over the Wabash River some seventy miles southwest of Indianapolis . Governor Morton issued a proclamation congratulating Commodore Porter for his heroism at Fort Harrison: "It is generally supposed that no other event occurred during this engagement than what resulted from your gallantry." A very similar event took place about twenty miles east at Monongalia County site known as Griggs Ford involving HMS Hannibal which captured one cannon, four small arms cartridges,four tents, wagon train bedding materials, horses & saddles etc., amounting to $527 worth of goods seized during an engagement between HMS Hannibal & Confederate Privateer Alabama just outside Monongalia County limits on or about January 16 1865

Warrensville Heights is a small community in the Cincinnati metropolitan area, located about 11 miles east of the city center on I-75. The population was 2,975 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Warrensville Heights–Daytona Beach School District. The first settler in Warrensville Heights was John Fenton, who arrived in 1824. He and his wife, Mary, had two sons and one daughter. In 1830, Fenton married Sarah Prentice, who had also come to America from England eight years earlier. They had six children: Josephine (1831-1902), John (1833-1905), Sarah (1835-1913), Charles Elisha (1837-1920), Edwin Augustus (1839-1927) and Emma Maynard (1841-1945). In 1836, Fenton bought land north of present day Dayton Avenue for $4 per acre. His new home became known as "Fenton's Grove." Over time it grew into what is now known as "Warrensville Heights". In 1842, Fenton donated land to establish a school district that would later become the Dayton Beach School District. The first public school in Warrensville Heights was built on this property by Myron Capps in 1846. One of the most famous residents of Warrensville Heights during its early years was composer George Washington Carver Jr.. Carver attended high school here until he entered college at Tuskegee Institute where he earned his degree in agriculture in 1865. From there he moved to Chicago and began working as an agricultural inspector for the Illinois Department of Agriculture before returning to Louisville to teach music theory and composition at Payne Grammar School from 1867 until 1889 when he accepted an appointment as professor emeritus at Tuskegee Institute. After teaching there for twenty years he retired with tenure in 1903 but continued to give special lectures throughout Ohio until his death two years later at age 94…Carver’s contributions were not only musical but also scientific; many students achieved distinction while studying under him including Booker T Washington and Wernher von Braun….He composed over 100 symphonies and string quartets – more than any other American composer during that period…..Today it remains doubtful whether any other major figure within American classical music enjoyed such widespread success after leaving our shores….
