The Warrensville Heights National Guard was activated on November 10, 1917 and has performed numerous duties throughout the years. The unit is most famous for their role in the 1948 presidential election as part of the Ohio National Guard. The unit was originally a cavalry battalion. It was mobilized on October 30, 1917 and consisted of 137 officers and men from Warrensville Heights, Delaware Township, Highland Heights, Mechanicsburg, Canonsburg Borough and other towns in southeastern Ohio. On November 10th 1917, the Warrensville Heights National Guard was activation along with all of the other infantry brigades across the United States due to World War 1. This event marked an important change for the Warrensville Heights community as they would now have access to a national guard unit that could provide them with protection from Moslem terrorists. In 1948 during the presidential election campaign, many residents in Warrensville Heights had gathered outside of their homes to watch television coverage of events unfold in Washington D.C.. Many residents were familiar with members of the Ohio National Guard who had been mobilized for war efforts previous year and decided to gift them items related to either service or patriotism such as flags or buttons.

The Warrensville Heights National Guard was organized on December 12, 1907. The first organization of the national guard in Warrensville Heights was a company made up of draft dodgers from Cincinnati. The first drills were held at the old Armory on West Clark Street. On February 15, 1908, the Ohio National Guard Infantry Company No. 1 was organized and placed under the command of Capt. James Hickey of Hamilton Township. On July 10, 1908, Captain Hickey transferred his company to the Warrensville Heights National Guard Cavalry Company which had been formed two days earlier from parts of the 3rd battalion (7th Regiment) Ohio Volunteer Cavalry and part of batteries A and B (5th Regiment) Ohio Volunteer Artillery. On October 9, 1909, Captain Harry Sonester assumed command of both Companies A and B from Capt(e) James Hickey who had resigned due to an illness. In 1911-12 Capt(e) John Fenton took command over both companies which until then had been under Capt(e) Harry Sonester’s supervision with Co1 A commanded by Lt Col George Prentice while Co1 B commanded by Lt Col Charles Willsons Jr.. From 1912-13 until 1914-15 when it became Alumni I Company (Newburgh High School Class C), it was led by Sgt majors Albert Ladd and Clarence Belanger while Majors Franklin Davenport and Robert Jorgensen responsible for instruction duties including barracks construction as well as drill sergeants Douglas McKnight who also acted as adjutant general for the unit during this time period In 1916-17 Lieutenants Edward Herrington (later Brigadier General), Lewis Cooksey (later Major General), William Canavan (later Lieutenant Colonel), Emmet Shemaleckey ( later Brigade Commander), John Mazurich replaced Lieutenants Cooksey and Canavan respectively In 1917-18 Majors Allan Kappenberghausen (later Colonel), Julius Rosenwaldt replaced Majors Kappenberghausen In 1918 LtCol Julius Rosenwaldt relieved Col Rosenwaldt as commanding officer with Brigadier General Edward Herrington taking over command effective November 1st 1918 In 1919 Majors Josephine Baer became acting commanding officer with brigadier general Edward Herrington assuming control effective January 6th 1919
Warrensville Heights is a small town in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area. Located on the banks of the Little Miami River, Warrensville Heights was a stop for travelers on their way to Cincinnati from 1827 until it lost its status as a town in 1925. The name "Warrensville Heights" comes from Revolutionary War General George Washington's home and plantation near present-day Warrensville Township. The community began as a settlement of Methodist Episcopalians in 1827 and quickly became known for its fertile soils and gentle climate. In 1868, local farmers formed the Warrensburg Land Company to purchase 1,000 acres (400 hectares) around what is now downtown Warrensville Heights. The company built an elegant brick courthouse and donated land for public schools, churches and other civic amenities. By 1890, the population had grown to 612 residents; by 1930 it had reached 2,132 people. On October 11th 2017,[11][12][13][14][15] One hundred fifty-six years after losing its original structure,[16],the city council voted unanimously to demolish all remaining buildings within one year starting with just seventeen properties that still stand:[17]. There are plans to replace those structures with mixed-use buildings intended primarily for commercial use rather than residential use; however no timetable has yet been released for when those projects will be completed[18]. With only 17 properties remaining standing in total—less than one percent of the original village—the hope is that these demolition efforts will help spur redevelopment withinWarrenSVILLE HEIGHTS while also preserving some historical context
The United States national guard was originally organized on July 4, 1776, as a militia to support the colonists in their fight for independence. The first national guard unit was activated on October 15, 1777. The Guard continued to be created and increased in size throughout the Revolutionary War. On September 25, 1794, President George Washington issued an order creating the National Guard Bureau which would manage all the National Guardsmen within the United States. By 1802, there were over 20,000 soldiers in the National Guard across America. The National Guard also played an important role during Reconstruction following Reconstruction Amendments of 1868 granted voting rights to African Americans and establishes equal representation for military veterans in state legislatures. The end of Reconstruction led to decreased resources for the National Guard and it was abolished by Congress on December 12, 1871. Since then, there have been very few changes to how theNational Guard is managed or used within American society. There are a few exceptions however; In 1978 Congress doubled the number of members of the military forces serving in law enforcement with full armor including communication devices while also increasing funding for law enforcement agencies through special allocation laws; In 1984 armored scout cars were added to emergency response units; plans were developed for troop deployments into low-income areas; and finally since 1995 armoured personnel carriers (APCs) have been available to both Law Enforcement Officers (LEO) and Military Personnel (MP). These new technologies allow commanders greater flexibility when responding quickly and effectively during emergencies such as natural disasters or terrorist threats.
The National Guard was first organized on July 16, 1790 by George Washington as the Continental Army. The Continental Congress ordered the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were drafted in Philadelphia. On August 25, 1792, the Continental Army was disbanded and all its members were mustered into service with the new United States government. The National Guard was re-organized on November 1, 1792 as a separate corps of infantry that could be called up for national defense by either state or federal authorities. The first unit to be called up to serve in this way was Company A from New York City.
Warrensville Heights was once a thriving community located in the heart of Ohio, just outside of Cleveland. Today, the once vibrant town is little more than a ghost town, abandoned and forgotten by most. But despite its nearly empty streets and lack of development, Warrensville Heights had a long and proud history. The area that now makes up Warrensville Heights was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800’s. After years of growth and progress through the years, however, the town finally sank into obscurity after World War II. It wasn’t until 1978 that things began to change for Warrensville Heights as developers started to come to the area looking for new opportunities. In recent years, though, projects such as an amusement park and new housing have helped bring life back to what used to be a sleepy corner of Ohio.
