The Warrensville Heights, Ohio National Guard has a rich military history dating back to the Revolutionary War. The unit was organized in 1775 and fought in the Battle of Bunker Hill. After the war, the Warrensville Heights militia served under General George Washington as well as President James K. Polk during the Mexican-American War. In 1846, General John A. Logan's brigade defended Warrensville Heights when Union forces attacked Cincinnati. The unit then helped to suppress a slave rebellion in 1850 before withdrawing from service in 1854. In 1903, the Warrensville Heights Militia was reorganized as an infantry regiment and participated in World War I until it was disbanded in 1918. From 1919-1938, the unit operated out of Camp Chase located on East Main Street in downtown Cincinnati. After World War II ended, the unit again disbanded but was reactivated for recruiting purposes in 1946 and remained active until 1991 when it finally folded Unit 1010th Infantry Regiment at Fort Benning Georgia Command Post with its personnel being absorbed into other units of that command post including 1st Battalion (Airborne) Artillery Regiment now entitles 2nd Brigade Combat Team Reserve United States Army Reserve

The Warrensville Heights, Ohio Army National Guard was activated on Nov. 11, 1898. The unit was redesignated the 171st Infantry Regiment on Jan. 1, 1907 and activated on Feb. 15, 1907 as part of the 3rd Brigade in the 6th Division in command of Major General John Pershing's American Expeditionary Force (AEF) during World War I. The regiment served with distinction throughout the war and was awarded the Distinguished Unit Citation for its actions at Belleau Wood and Ypres-Lechfeld. On November 12, 1918, after years of service in Europe, the regiment was mustered out of service and returned home to Warrensville Heights on December 21st.

Warrensville Heights, Ohio is a small town in the southeastern corner of Ohio, on the right bank of the Cuyahoga River. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Warrensville Heights was James C. Warren who arrived in 1824 and named his home "Warrensburg". The town started off as a tiny community along the banks of the Cuyahoga River. By 1860, it had grown to over 100 residents and had its own post office. In 1876, Warrensville Heights became part of Muskingum County when it was split from Lorain County. In 1907, Warrensville Heights amalgamated with neighboring townships to form what is now known as Warrensville Township. In 1916, it merged with neighbouring village of Mayfield to become Mayfield Village. In 1922 it merged once more with nearby village of Shaker Heights to become Shaker Heights Village. Finally in 1970, it formed what is now known as Warrensville Heights Township again after splitting from Muskingum Township
