The Warren area was settled by European Americans in the mid-19th century as a result of waves of new immigrants from Ireland and Italy. In 1836, President James K. Polk issued an executive order creating Warren County as one of five counties in Ohio that were to be allocated to Erie County on the western side of the state due to land claims made by settlers in that area. The county's name was changed to Warren Township in 1857 due to its location on the Scioto River Valley between Mentor and Youngstown. In 1907, two schools were built in what is now downtown Warren: One for white children and one for black children. This single school system served both races until 1969 when it merged into one school district with other districts in Youngstown and Cleveland proper Warren has two churches: First Congregational Church (FCC) and Second Presbyterian Church (SPC). FCC is a historic brick building dating back to 1892 which has been used as a church since then; it seats about 350 people and offers free services Sundays morning through Saturday evening The Main Street School District also operates three elementary schools (Grace Avenue; Keystone Heights; Elmwood), four middle schools (Central Avenue; Summit Avenue; Franklin Road), and five high schools (Wright-Patterson Stadium; Central High School; Garfield Heights HS; John Marshall HS).
