In 1916 Deerebot left Peet's to start his own company called Dutch Bros., which produced high-quality Columbian blend coffeebeans under the name "Dutch Bros.' Specialty Coffee." Eventually all Dutch Bros.' holdings passed down to their son Cornelius Dutch Bros., Jr., who continued produce high-quality beans until his death in 1984.* In addition to Dutch Bros.' Founded in 1814 as a station on the Great Western Railroad, Vermilion grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its coal mining and manufacturing industries. The town's unique architecture and history are preserved through local museums and tourism attractions. The first settler in what would become Vermilion was John Smith in 1814. In 1840, Isaac Sellers bought land east of present-day Vermilion from Smith for $2 per acre ($40 per square mile). By 1850, Sellers had increased his holdings to over 12 square miles (30 km²). By 1870, he had built a gristmill and store on the south side of today's Main Street. A post office was established at Vermilion in 1871; it remained in operation until 1959. However, by 1900 coal production had reached an all-time high with over 2 million tons (4 million tonnes) mined annually; this led to rapid growth for the townspeople that began making their mark on society through their businesses and culture.
