Vermilion, Ohio is a small town in the Muskingum County seat of Lima. It had a population of 1,511 as of the 2010 census. The Vermilion-Lima Micropolitan Statistical Area has a population of 2,127. The first settler in what is now Vermilion was David Dayton who came from Connecticut in 1795 and platted what is now Lima on the Scioto River in 1812. The area became part of Adams County when it was formed from parts of Muskingum and Summit Counties in 1821. In 1836, Lima was made the county seat; it remained an important center for trade until the railroad arrived in 1868. The town's growth following industrialization began during World War II with wartime production at Ford Motor Company and other companies located there such as Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. After 1945, however, Vermilion experienced rapid decline due to declining economic activity and suburban development around it; its only major industry remaining is agriculture which still dominates today.

Vermilion, Ohio is a town located in the U.S. state of Ohio. It was founded in 1796 by George Washington and named for the red color of the earth. The original Vermilion Township was formed on December 12, 1802, from portions of Ottawa and Portage counties. In 1815, Vermilion became a part of the new United States Territory of Michigan. In 1821, it became a part of the new United States District of Columbia and in 1828 it became one of thirteen towns in what would become Summit County, Ohio. The population was 2,906 at the 2010 census[1] and has grown to over 11,000 since then. The town is home to several famous landmarks including the State Capitol Building (built between 1907-1909), Mount Vernon Castle (completed in 1903), Stroudsburg Park (opened in 1922) and Vermilion High School (established in 1909). Other notable institutions include University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and Reedsburg General Hospital which are both affiliated with Case Western Reserve University; as well as numerous other businesses and restaurants throughout downtown Vermilion.
Vermilion was founded in 1824 by John C. Vermilion and his wife, Sarah. The town was named for the color of its soil, which is a deep red. In 1839, the Vermilions moved to Cincinnati after their farm failed and they lost their land to foreclosure. In 1847, the town became a village and in 1865 it became a city.
