The history of the navy in Vandalia, Ohio dates back to the early 1800s. At that time, the town was home to a small fleet of sailing ships called the Volunteer Navy. The vessels were used for local transportation and participated in numerous military engagements during the Revolutionary War. After the war, sailor’s tales and stories about their experiences in the navy continued to circulate. In 1821, Commodore John Dickey established a Naval Academy for boys in Vandalia. This school became an important source of naval training for future officers and sailors. In 1826, Commodore James Worthy established a permanent navy battalion at Vandalia. The battalion served as a defense against Indian attacks during the 1830s and 1840s. In 1847, Commodore Isaac Watts organized a new squadron of warships called “The United States Squadron” at Vandalia. This squadron was responsible for conducting humanitarian missions around America during this time period. During World War II,Vandalia played an important role within The United States Navy by providing shipyards and facilities necessary forbuilding USS Wayne (CV-8) and USS Lexington (CV-6). In 1951,Vandalia became home tothe first naval air station on Lake Erie when VP-3 joined NAS Cleveland

Today, Vandalia is still a major player in maritime industry with several vessels currently being built at its shipyard.
Vandalia, Ohio is a small town in the state of Ohio. The population was 3,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton metropolitan area. The town is named after General John Vandall, who fought in the American Revolution and represented Vandalia Township in the first United States Congress. The community was founded in 1837 by early settlers from Scotland and Ireland. By 1860, Vandalia had a post office, five schools, two churches and a store. In 1870, it had a railroad depot and three stores. The town lost its railroad connection in 1936 but regained it in 1950 when the Dayton-Canton Railroad arrived through Vandalia to serve new residents near Canton and other townships within Dayton's city limits. Today, Vandalia has two churches - First Presbyterian (founded 1871) and Methodist (established 1865). It also has a theater (the National Theatre), several restaurants including Aloha Joe's Pizza ($) and Golden Corral BBQ ($$, open daily), four banks - First Community Bank (founded 1899), First State Bank of Delaware Park(1898), Citizens National Bank of Delaware Park(1907) and First Trust & Savings bank of Delaware Park(1919)), one health clinic - Hendricks County Integrative Health Care Center ($) which serves residents of surrounding villages as well as patients from nearby hospitals such as Marshall University Medical Center($$) local businesses include several grocery stores including Aloha Joe's Pizza ($) and Gourd's Eatery ($) . There are also several small businesses that provide services such as lawn care or roofing services. As with most small towns in this country, there is no library or nightlife district; however there are several places to purchase groceries or beer at local convenience stores

Vandalia is best known for its role in the American Revolution. The town played an important role as a supply depot for General George Washington's forces during his campaigns against the British Empire. Additionally, Vandalia served as headquarters for Federal troops during the War of 1812 and was attacked by British forces four times between 1798 and 1800. The town also experienced several other moments in its history including being one of two places where Ohio statehood was granted to America on July 4th, 1791; becoming home to one of Cleveland's first schools; hosting a meeting that decided Ohio would become an abolitionist state; and playing host to the first cricket game ever played at Great Britain's Green Park Cricket Ground on October 12th, 1814

In 1840, Vandalia became a town after being annexed by the city of Athens. The town had a population of over 500 residents by 1860. On July 1, 1871, Vandalia became an independent city when Athens annexed it.
