Vandalia, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Mahoning County. The population was 63,898 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern edge of Cleveland Plainview Township and is north-northwest of Akron. The first settlement in what is now Vandalia was a small hamlet called Newtown in 1810 by Adamantine Smith and his family who had emigrated from Portsmouth, England. The name Newtown changed to Vandalia after General George Washington's march through the area during his final campaign for president in 1796–97 became known as "theBattle of Vandalia." In 1812, John Vincent, owner of an estate near present day Vandalia also founded a small village called Greenfield which he named after himself because he owned all the land within that vicinity prior to its incorporation into Mahoning County as part of that year's homesteading program authorized by then-President James Kapp de Witt. Vandalia, Ohio is a small town located in the heart of the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 9,814 at the 2010 census and has grown to over 11,000 since then. It is known for its apple orchards and manufacturing industries; Vandalia is also home to two professional sports teams: the Dayton Dragons of the National Professional Baseball League (NPB) and the Vandals of NCAA Division I college baseball. The name "Vandalia" comes from an Indian word meaning "place where there are no trees." The first settlers in what is now Vandalia arrived in 1795, when George Washington's army advanced through this part of present-day Ohio on their way to Battle Creek against Native Americans. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson's army burned down Fort Stephenson near Vandalia while raiding Indian villages nearby. This event became known as the Battle of Vandalia. In 1815, John Greenleaf Whittier wrote a poem about life in Vandalia called "Ode to a Village". In it, he described how people hereabouts used to go out into the fields every day to plough and sow land. He noted that even today many people still do this work: "For they know not why other men should leave them behind!" What followed were some harsh times for young Vandalians during America's Civil War era; however, by 1865 most residents had moved away or been killed in battle or lost property during Reconstruction efforts. At that time much of what was left of town was destroyed by firebombing raids conducted by American military forces during World War II as part of D-Day Operation Overlord.. In 1948 new construction began on Main Street which again helped revive downtown after years of neglect by city officials; today much old architecture remains within sight along with many businesses dating back more than 50 years - including one that has survived multiple fires! A few years ago another major development took place when plans were announced for a high speed railway line running through downtown from Cincinnati via Dayton to Columbus – but alas this never happened! Instead it was replaced with a much larger light rail project currently under construction! Although disappointed about this turn of events one must remember that Downtown USA isn't done quite yet...
