The coffee industry in Van Wert, Ohio started in the early 1800s. The first coffee house opened up in 1811 and it was until 1825 that the first grocery store opened up. The coffee beans were brought over by wagon trains from Illinois. Coffee beans were ground into coffee drinks, such as chamomile tea and periwinkle poultice, for sale at local stores. In 1830, a mill was built in Van Wert to grind the beans. It continued to be used until 1907 when it was replaced by a larger machine. By 1850, there were three stores selling coffee and two restaurants serving meals with coffee. In 1945, a small company called Dutch Bros. Coffee began production of van wert-branded espresso drinks called “Dutch Bros” or DD for short before eventually changing its name to Starbucks due to trademark problems with another company which had similar names (Starbucks bought Dutch Bros’ assets in 2002). After enjoying some success across America during the 1990s – primarily due to its red cups – Starbucks decided to open up their Van Wert operations in 2001 under new ownership including entrepreneur Kevin Johnson who purchased the business from previous owner Bob Evans Ventures (now part of PepsiCo) after he failed to secure city approval for an adjacent expansion project that would have doubled shop space and displaced nearly 100 jobs when it finally got approved six years earlier; this led directly to the current incarnation of Starbuck’s being founded on Main Street just east of downtown VanWert on December 12th 1987 by Dan Jennings as Jennings Coffee Company Inc.; later changed back again (to Starbuck’s) after purchasing large adjoining lots next door from Bob Evans Ventures prior to July 1st 1992 because of zoning issues associated with increased population growth around town since he relocated his headquarters from Wichita Falls TX.).
