The Van Wert National Guard was organized on September 25, 1921. The purpose of the guard was to provide law and order in the city during times of peace or emergency. Van Wert is a city in the eastern third of Ohio, United States. The population was 12,521 at the 2010 census. It lies in the western portion of the Greater Cleveland metropolitan area and is part of the Dayton–Middletown, OH-KY–IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The site that would become Van Wert was first settled by Quakers in 1795. In 1801, it became a town when it united with other settlements to form the Miami County seat of Lima. In 1902, it became an unincorporated community again when its boundaries were changed byzonation to include parts of Scioto Valley east of US Route 6 and west of US Route 21 (the present day boundaries of Van Wert). As part as part of their agreement with patentees thereof, these settlers relinquished all claims to land within their limits including what is now Van Wert. In 1807, Ohio statehood was granted to America and on July 16th this year, Van Wert became one of its newly organized counties under the name “Toledo”. That same year saw construction begin on what would become today’s downtown core – a wooden frame building designed by Ebenezer Mifflin that still stands today asstatic evidence that Toledo fever did not reach this area until after Ohio attained statehood It wasn't until 1830 when some new settlers arrived from Pennsylvania who founded what would become known as "The First Methodist Church" on Third Street – just south of where Main Street currently stands On December 31st 1836 local citizens voted 3-1 in favor OF annexing into adjacent Scioto County due to high demand for farmland from nearby residents following news reports about President Andrew Jackson's proposed Indian Removal policies This decision set off a years long battle betweenof both sides which ultimately ledto annexation by Scioto County and establishment as VanWert's permanent county seat . The original courthouse located at Fourth and Elm Streets still stands today serving as a museum open to the public

The Guards were called up for service during the American Revolution and served in many battles. After the war, the National Guard was disbanded and its resources divided among other government organizations. However, it was reactivated in 1954 as a paramilitary force to support domestic law enforcement and defense purposes. In 1960, the National Guard was made an armed forces reserve unit with full military capabilities. Today, the National Guard continues to play an important role in U.S. society by providing manpower for homeland security and disaster relief missions around the country.
The National Guard was first activated on July 24, 1790 as the Second Continental Congress authorized the creation of a national guard to protect New York City. The first regiment called the 2nd New York Regiment was organized on October 15, 1790 and served in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. On December 14, 1792, the 1st Connecticut Regiment (later redesignated as 3rd Connecticut Regiment) was raised and its colonel elected by ballot from officers of other regiments then serving in New York City. The regiment served until 1800 when it participated in the War of 1812 and also fought at Saratoga and Battle of Ticonderoga. After that service it disbanded on September 30th, 1802. In 1865, soldiers from Vermont's 3rd Infantry Brigade (First Vermont Volunteers) were mobilized to serve in Reconstruction following the Civil War. Van Wert is a city in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,651 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Butler County. The first resident of Van Wert was James Fenton and his wife Nancy in 1789. The town was laid out by commissioners named Green and Lewis on April 6, 1810. The first store was built by William Ladd in 1814. A schoolhouse and courthouse were built in 1830; the latter burned down in 1834 but was rebuilt and became a part of the city limits. In 1837, John Smeaton purchased land east of town from Nicholas Tiffin for $100 per acre (the deal included an option to buy another parcel for $50 per acre). That year saw the founding of the Cleveland & Erie Railroad which connected Van Wert with Cleveland via Toledo. In 1840, Van Wert had a population of about 100 people when it became part of Coshocton Township; in 1850 it had grown to 350 residents when it became part of Butler County. In 1860, it had reached its peak with 1,000 residents; however, during that decade violence erupted within the community over land seizures made by local farmers seeking to build new cotton plantations near Akron while also exploiting their sharecroppers who refused to sell their lands back to them after becoming self-sufficient farmers overnight On December 12th 1861 three men - David Swartzendruber (1815–76), George Ziegler (1824–92) and Johann Weigel (1825–96) - shot at Mayor John Pappagee as he walked home from work on Main Street because they believed he had taken too much credit for building new roads into town Two days later all three men were dead including Mayor Pappagee who bled out until he arrived at an insurance office two blocks away where he died four days later Fenimore Fenton organized a committee to investigate what happened that day which resulted in indictments against six individuals: Ziegler (for shootingMayor Pappagee), Swartzendruber (for conspiracy), Weigel (for murder), Fenimore Fenton himself(for leadership role), Nicholas Tiffin(for owning property adjacent to where mayor died) and Anthony Smith(a wagon driver working for Fenimore Fenton) All six were eventually acquitted except Smith who served 10 years probation before being released In 1865 Addison Gorman opened up a general store called Gorman's Drug Store on Main Street which soon became one of the most successful businesses in town During World War I there was military action around Van Wert between November 28th 1916-January 5th 1917 with several homes destroyed as well as one street corner burned down
