Gourmet Coffee in Van Wert, Ohio first began trading coffee beans in 1969. It was founded by two brothers, Dan and Dick Godwin. The Godwins were the first to import coffee from Africa into the United States. They roasted and served their own coffee until they closed shop in 1992. In 2001, a group of entrepreneurs bought the business and reopened it as Gourmet Coffee & Tea Company. In 2007, they moved their location to a new building that has since been renamed The Annexe. Van Wert, Ohio is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Mequon Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Dutch settlers in 1795 and named for John Van Wert, an early settler. In 1822, the first post office in Van Wert opened under the name of Wellsboro. The name was changed to Van Wert in 1827 after General David Hunter's victory over Native Americans at Battle of White Marsh. In 1870, three years after Michigan became a state, Van Wert incorporated as a village. On November 8 of that year it had a total population of 194 people and two churches – one Congregational and one Methodist – were located on Main Street. The first school in town was built on School Road in 1871 and served grades 1-6 until 1915 when it moved to what is now the community center on North High Street. A new high school building was completed in 1985 and serves grades 7-12 today According to the 2000 United States Census there were 2,908 people living in Van Wert Township including 1,723 households out of which 1,569 (77%) had children under the age of 18 living with them; 730 (24%) were married couples living together; 293 (11%) had a female householder with no husband present; and 95 (4%) had a male householder with no wife present. In terms of race composition: 93% white non-Hispanic while 5% black or African American

In 1795, an Italian trader named Giovanni Andrea D’Angelo brought ground beans from Ethiopia to Venice. At first, the Italians brewed their coffee in small homes and kitchens. But as word spread about this delicious beverage, people began traveling to Ethiopia to purchase beans and learn how to make it at home. Eventually, espresso machines were started in Italy and other countries in order to produce gourmet quality coffee. The first espresso machine was created by AngeloFrancesco Bonomi in 1892. This device used a plunger-operated pump that delivered a rich flavor and aroma of espresso into cups or mugs. However, it wasn’t until 1974 thatground coffee became available for purchase on a regular basis through grocery stores all over the United States. In 1825, Van Wert became the capital of Ohio and the first state in the United States to be created from part of France. The city’s rich history begins with its origins as a French fur-trading post on the Great Lakes. In 1792, when George Washington founded his presidential mansion here, he named it Mount Vernon because he had been there before as an American Ambassador. John Adams also resided in Van Wert for a time during his presidency. The city was incorporated on December 12, 1827 by order of the Ohio General Assembly. It grew rapidly due to its location on Lake Erie and its access to transportation viaboats and railroads. In 1850, Van Wert became home to one of the largest printing plants in America when it was founded by Julius Czolgosz and Isaac Niles. Over time, other businesses have moved into the city including law firms, medical practices, insurance companies and manufacturing operations such as metallurgy and Printing Presses & Paper Mills Co., which manufactured newspapers until 1978. Van Wert is known for its agricultural products such as apples (the most popular fruit), grapes and corn; its breweries such as Pabst Brewing Company (founded in 1868), Allagash Brewing Company (founded in 1915) and Newcastle Brewery (founded in 1888); and its theatres including The Players Theatre (established in 1865) and The Cleveland Playhouse (opened in 1925). Additionally, Van Wert is home to several universities including Xavier University (founded in 1889), Ashland University(founded in 1907)and Kent State University(establishedin 1945).
