Van Wert, Ohio is a small city located in the heart of the United States. The population was 9,711 as of the 2010 census and has grown to 12,521 since the 2000 census. The city is named after General George Washington's birthplace, Mount Vernon. Van Wert became an incorporated town in 1836 and was designated a city by resolution of the Ohio General Assembly in 1907. It annexed part of Dayton in 1912. In 1984, it became one of 36 communities within the Cincinnati metropolitan area that joined together as Hamilton Township-Van Wert to form Hamilton County. The city operates its own police department and fire departments; however, all law enforcement services are provided by Cincinnati Police Department. The economy of Van Wert is mainly service-based with manufacturing accounting for about 60% of economic activity. Manufacturing includes clothing and accessories, plastics and rubber products, computers and software, automotive parts and equipment, health care products such as painkillers and vaccines, among others. Some non-manufacturing businesses include two banks (OneVanWertandOneDayton), two grocery stores (Gonzalez Grocery & More Market Place) and five restaurants (Four Seasons PizzaLounge & Greek Garden). Van Wert was founded in 1814 by pioneer David Van Wert and his brother John. The town was named for Captain Cornelius van Wert, who had been killed in a skirmish with the Indians near the area in 1813. It became a post office in 1827 and a city in 1907. In 1922, it merged with the neighboring town of Gallipolis to form the current city of Van Wert. The history of Van Wert is deeply intertwined with that of its sister towns, Galesburg and Gallipolis. The first settler at present-day Van Wert was David Van Wert Sr., who arrived there from York County, Pennsylvania on July 7, 1814. He built a log cabin on what is now State Route 11A east of the village square. within days he had erected other buildings including a store and began to trade with surrounding villages for goods necessary for building his settlement. By fall of 1814, he had organized a local Presbyterian church which met in his home until moved to nearby Galesburg two years later when that town's pastor offered to build them an nicer church on land donated by local farmer James Lowry. Captain Cornelius vanWerft's death at the hands of Native Americans near present-day VanWern (then known as Coshocton) on October 20th, 1813 leftDavid and John vanWerft sole Proprietors & Ventrys of this place & all their Lands therein; they continued So thro’out their Lifetime Ditto; And deeded This Place Againe To Their Sonne David Jr., As His Life Was continuall In Service To This Place.—So Deed By My Brother David Vangirdt Sr., August 14th, 1830 It wasn't until after Captain Cornelius' death that locals started calling themselves "Van Wenters." On October 8th, 1827 – just five weeks after Captain Cornelius' death – the original City Council voted unanimously to rename the community "Van Werther." The name stuck and has been used ever since! In 1907, due to population growth and increased infrastructure needs associated with World War II (including Camp Chase Air Force Base), Van Werther annexed Gallipolis - making it one of three cities within Ohio designated as such during that time period (the others being Columbus andAkron). Today's downtown area includes many businesses dating back to those early days - including Hometown Radio Station WCFL-FM - which originated from WWJZ AM 1310 kHz here invanwerther! After World War II ended hostilities were commonplace throughout much of North America as people geared up for reconstruction efforts following war damage across most industries were ongoing or increasing rapidly especially along Interstate 90 corridor between Chicago and Cleveland . However developments took place primarily southward where Pittsburgh , Cincinnati & Detroit were construction sites adjacent varying degrees of poverty while larger amounts jobs remained available but wages slowly decreased throughout these areas . Most workers hereabouts found temporary work doing things like manufacturing or agriculture provided some degree subsistence income however permanent employment opportunities typically only came about once industry stabilized following 1945 through various technological advancements/changes which created more stable paychecks outside traditional white collar professions
