The first settler in what is now Van Wert was Nicholas de Waal, who came to America in 1681 with his family and landed on the east coast of Long Island. He brought over 300 slaves with him when he arrived in North America. In 1795, John Beverley founded a ferry service from Saybrook to New York City that became one of the most important transportation links between those two cities during the early 1800s. In 1827, Dutch settlers James and Cornelius van der Post were driven out of their home on High Hill Road by Native Americans for refusing to sell them land they had claim to. They returned two years later and started a farm called "Werthert" (now known as Van Wert) on land that had been given to them by Conrad Weiser as part of his grant from Queen Victoria for $3 per acre (about $2 per square foot). The van der Postes named their new home "Van Wert" after their old farmstead in Holland where they had lived before coming overland across Lake Erie aboard shipwrecked pioneers' boats in 1681/1682.. They began farming there until 1830 when they sold their holdings back to Weiser for $5 per acre ($3 +$1).On October 3rd 1830, President George Washington signed an act creating The United States territory of Northwest Ohio which included all present day Delaware County including parts of present day Van Wert Township along with much of what is now Muskegon County including Grand Rapids and Cadillac Heights...After more than three centuries as an English speaking community located within the boundaries of what is now Delaware County - due largely to military actions -Van WERT BEGAN TO BE A CULTURE CENTER FOR AMERICAN INDIAN Migrants Who Arrived Between 1840 And 1860." Today's residents are descendants or original inhabitants who have moved here over time or are transplants from other areas near Cleveland or Akron thanks to globalization and technology advancements such as cell phone services and online shopping available everywhere else these days! One popular tourist attraction hereabouts is The Samuel Adams Brewery which opened its doors in 1914 after being founded just outside Cleveland by Samuel Adams Brewing Company founder Abner Doubleday Jr.. One can find artifacts dating back to 1790 nearby at Point State Park located adjacent to Highway 6 which connects Cleveland with Akron! Together they had six children: John Fenton (1825-1910), George Washington Hockley (1827-1900), Jane Frances Hockley (1829-1913), Ezekiel Hubbard (1831-1905), and Rebecca Ann Hockley (1833-1920). The family's prosperous business practices earned them accolades from their neighbors and friends alike. Beginning in 1830, Reverend Ebenezer Farnsworth served as pastor at Xenia’s first Methodist church. Farnsworth’s teachings helped to change vanWert into an inclusive community based upon Christianity instead of pure paganism. He also contributed significantly to shaping vanWert’s future educational institutions – including Xenia Academy which opened its doors in 1837 and still operates today. During this time period there were also several other important changes taking place in vanWert: politics began to shift towards democracy; families startedto marry within their own social circles; businesses became more diverse; and religious beliefs evolved from pure paganism to Christianity AFPftonia Fraternity Universalis serva Dei . . . these are just some examples of how vanWernet changed over time due to influences external or internal to its residents
In 1801, the Miami and Erie Canal was completed between Cleveland and Toledo. This opened up the area to development and made it easier for goods to get from Ohio to Illinois. The canal also allowed traffic to move faster through the area, which helped make Van Wert a more developed community.
