The Van Wert Air Force Base gift history goes back to 1954 when the United States Air Force opened up its new air base in Van Wert. The base was used primarily for training military personnel and was home to the 436th Bombardment Wing which operated B-29s. In 1958, the wing moved to nearby Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the 435th Bombardment Wing took over operations of the B-29s. The 436th Bombardment Wing was disbanded in 1969 and its portion of the base became known as Wright-Patterson AFB. In 1992, USAF Station Van Wert closed due to budget cuts and it reopened as an airport under US Customs and Border Protection control. In 2003, US Customs & Border Protection closed down USAF Station Van Wert again due to budget cuts but it reopened as an airport under US Department of Transportation control in 2006. As of 2019, USAF Station Van Wert is still open as an airport under US Department of Homeland Security control.
Van Wert is a small town in northeastern Ohio, located on the Scioto River. The population was 5,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mahoning Valley and is adjacent to Youngstown. The town was founded in 1814 by farmers from other parts of Ohio who cross the Scioto River to find land that had been lost to Indians. In 1826, Van Wert became a county seat of Mahoning County. In 1868, it became a city and retains this distinction today. Van Wert is known for its log grist mill which produces flour for bread making and pasta sauce; Van Wert Baking Company which makes pastries such as donuts and croissants; and Business Park Mall which contains several restaurants, Walmart,CREW Diner (a convenience store), gas station, doctor's office/emergency room, library/museum combo hall and two banks. Van Wert is a small town in Van Wert County, Ohio, United States. It was founded in 1824 by James and Nancy (Fenner) Van Wert. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. The first European to set foot in what is now Van Wert was French explorer La Salle in 1786. From his exploration of the area he reported back to France that there were "a great many villages" on the east side of the Ottawa River. One such village, on the site of present-day Van Wert, may have been named for him – Lachine or Lachine Village. In 1800 Nicholas Flushing built a log cabin near what is now downtown VanWert and named it Fox Chapel after his home state of New York. The first post office in town was established at Fox Chapel on July 8, 1826; it was renamed Van Wert in honor of James Fenner's father-in-law, Ebenezer van Wyck Flushing. In 1830, when Ohio became a state, one vote separated Cleveland from Cincinnati as its capital city and so Fox Chapel became the provisional capital until Cincinnati came under control two years later. By 1836 most settlers had moved away from Fox Chapel and new settlements were established around Youngstown and Athens Mills lake – all within sight of each other on high ground between those townships and along Canfield Creek which connected them all. The growth around Youngstown followed an agricultural pattern with farmers growing corn (maize), oats, potatoes, vegetables and fruits; dairy farmers produced milk and cheese; coal miners mined coal near Athens Mills; lumbermen built homes out of logs gathered from local woods; wagon drivers transported goods between Youngstown and Athens Mills over canals dug through the bedrock by their predecessors who harvested wild timber for building materials since these days transportation also served as both commercial processing industries as well as providing access to markets for goods grown elsewhere outside these townships’ boundaries: whole grains like wheat that were milled into flour at mills located southwest ofYoungstown;; cotton picked by slaves north ofYoungstown;; hardwood chips used for construction products northeast ofYoungstown.; beet sugar being processed into syrup at Selfridge’s Beetsmith Mill before shipment off to Europe where it formed part of refined sugarcane products exported from this region during this period
Van Wert was founded in 1834 by trustees of the Ohio State Asylum, which then stood on what is now the corner of Third and Gay streets. The new town was named for General James Van Wert, who had been instrumental in developing the area. The population of Van Wert grew rapidly from its original 100 residents to 1,500 within a few years. In 1835, the first courthouse was built and in 1845, the first school building was erected. By 1860, there were three churches in Van Wert – First Presbyterian (founded 1836), Methodist (1851), and Baptist (1857). In 1865, a post office was established in Van Wert and by 1870 it had become an important center for mail delivery.
