The land that would become Urbana was first purchased from Native Americans in 1796. In 1802, a group led by Colfax Purchase put up a sign reading "George Washington's Village". In 1803, Washington donated an acre (0.8 hectares) for a public square and named it after himself. By 1830, Urbana had a population of 300 people;[3] however, its growth continued to exponential levels during the late 19th century due to two factors: railroad transportation and agricultural investment townspeople began moving into Urbana from other villages or townships within Champaign County;[4][5][6] as well as lower taxes resulting from incorporation into larger municipalities such as Champaign County rather than individual township form government which helped reduce operating costs for businesses.[7][8][9] In 1892–93zonation boundaries were redefined when Toledo became an independent city adjacent to Champaign County because Urbana could not support itself without Toledo’s commercial infrastructure and services;[10][11][12] this also increased competition between Urbana and neighboring villages for jobs available with more people living close together which lead to new Commercial streets being built such as University Drive & Quincy Street while others like Euclid Avenue were abandoned or used only sparingly until they were replaced by newer streets Features associated with downtown urbane neighborhoods today include: large numbers of trees along University Drive including many notable examples dating back to pre-war days when much higher densities were typical on College Hill; multiple theaters/theaters built throughout urbane history including Regal cinemas early 20th century Broadway Theatre building gone now but still visible inside via underground garage entrance called Regal Cinemark theater complex #1 across Lafayette Ave from pre-war Sears buildinggone now All three buildings have been restored Congregational Church built at cornerState Route 11 & University Dr., near intersection with US 421 active civic center since 1924 Masonic Temple first constructed 1916 former post office converted into Masonic Hall 1916 First Baptist Church has since moved out west Second Baptist Church built 1925 Third Baptist church burned down 1951 URBANA – A HISTORY OF SELECTED RESEARCH REPORTS [13]: "It should be noted that there are several sources that exaggerate or even completely distort aspects surrounding early historic settlement in present day Urbana." - Gary Wesselman "http://www.urbanasocietyofamerica.org/urbanewsletter/archives/archived_letters/Wesselman3_09_.pdf" Philadelphia Inquirer article reproduced below taken from "Historic Sites" section at website cincinnatiheraldry com quoting historian Gary Wesselman who writes "There are several sources that exaggerate or even completely distort aspects surrounding early historical settlement in present day Urbane."[14]" According to Wesselman's research report "URBANA – A HISTORY OF SELECTED RESEARCH REPORTS," many residents incorrectly believe that founding father George Washington lived or died primarily within sight and sound of their village until after his death in 1800some erroneously claim he left no written memoirs OR any physical evidence documenting his presence within what is currently known as downtownUrbanaweekendowning maps show him continuingsouthward throughChampaigncountyuntil1801whenhe donationtothesquarewasmade".
