The city was founded in 1853 by George Stephenson and others as a village on the east bank of the Illinois River. They named their new town after Jean Baptiste Urbain, Sieur de la Salle's private secretary who accompanied him on his journey from Quebec City to Detroit in 1796. La Salle had also been exploring the area which he proposed naming "New Orleans" because of its similarity to that river's mouth in Louisiana, but this proposal was not accepted by other officials on account of its geographical location near Illinois' southern border. In 1801, John Gregg became territorial governor of Michigan Territory and appointed George Rogers Clark as one of his commissioners to explore what would become Urbana Township (now Champaign County). Clark discovered that there was land available for settlement in this area and started building a small community called Montrose on December 10, 1801; it soon became known as Urbana because Clarksville was located about two miles north-northwest of where it stood today.
