The United States Air Force deployed a gift from the civilian community in Urbana, Ohio on Dec. 1, 2017. The service presented a Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II Fighter Jet to UIUC’s Drew Ritchie and its President, Michael M. Drake for their success in conducting airstrikes against ISIS during the campaign season. Ritchie is an experienced fighter pilot who has fought in Iraq and Afghanistan as part of Operation Inherent Resolve; Drake is the president of UIUC and has been influential at the university since he was appointed in 2014. The gift was symbolic of the close relationship betweenUIUC and the USAF. The F-35 was donated by Lockheed Martin after its sale to Canada in 2015. It is one of only two jets ever made available to civilians for use by government agencies domestically (the other being an RAF Typhoon jet). The US military plans to purchase up to 362 F-35s, which will be stationed at sixteen different locations around America by 2021.
