It is bordered to the east by University Circle and to the west by Eastlake. The area that today makes up Upper Arlington was first settled in 1795 as part of what was then Huron Township. In 1812, it became part of Ashtabula Township and in 1868 it became part of Delaware County. The townships were abolished in 1908 and their land reorganized into blocks for development within each township. The name "Upper Arlington" was given to the entire block on which Upper Arlington now sits after General David Dennison refused an offer from John Pugh to sell him 600 acres (24 ha) of land just east of present-day University Circle for $2,000 cash only because he felt that this would give too much prominence to Ashtabula Township's village located near downtown Cleveland while Lower Arlington would remain little known outside its own community. In 1860, a post office called Highland Heights was established in what is nowLower Arlington; it closed in 1871.
