Cook's post served as the nucleus of what would become Upper Arlington. The original town plat included three blocks of land west of Waveland Drive and east of State Road 449/Highway 23. In 1805, John Lennon settled on land between State Road 449/Highway 23 and Waveland Drive and soon developed into one of Upper Arlington's most successful businesses – running a grocery store, cigaretts store and barbershop until it closed its doors in 1922. Upper Arlington is a village in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the west bank of the Cuyahoga River. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. Upper Arlington was founded in 1811 as a place called "Randolph". It was renamed to "Upper Arlington" in 1836 after Colonel Robert Upper Arlington, an officer in the American Revolution and signer of the United States Constitution. In 1892, Lower Arlington merged with Upper Arlington to form one village. On July 1, 2002, Lower Arlington became an independent municipality within Greater Cleveland under an agreement between its two villages. In 1811, Randolph was founded by Major David Richardson and Captain Nicholas Perry as a site for a new town on what is now east side of Cuyahoga River south of where I-271 currently meets US-40 (and north of where today's University Circle is). The first settler named Randolph may have been John Randolph who arrived from Kentucky in early 1800s and built a log cabin near present day Main Street/Cleveland Heights Boulevard/Richardson Road—the same spot that he would purchase two years later from General David Connor for $1,000 (). The first permanent buildings were erected soon thereafter around this time including a meeting house and schoolhouse which are still standing today on Elmwood Avenue just north of Scranton Road (which runs parallel to Main Street). A wharf was also constructed at this location allowing goods arriving from Ships Channel Ferry landing to be unloaded here before being transported downriver to marketplaces such as Cleveland or Market Square. It wasn't until 1830 that RANDOLPH VILLAGE COLLYWOOD & RANDOLPH MILLS CHURCH were completed on what is now Elmwood Avenue near present day Union Terminal Square / Masonic Temple fame (& along with surrounding streets) becoming one of upperarlington's earliest landmarked properties & most well known throughout their respective community areas! A post office called Randolph opened at this address on November 17th 1830 under Acting Postmaster Drury; however it closed August 12th 1861 due to mail fraud by Timothy Halleck! The current name given to Upper Arlington today – RANDOLPH – likely originated with this initialVillage Name change back then!
