Upper Arlington is a census-designated place in the town of Bedford, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The village of Upper Arlington was laid out in 1827 by John Welsh and named for Major General George Washington's landing on the Delaware River there that year. Upper Arlington became a town in 1837 and was incorporated as a village in 1853. The name "Upper Arlington" was first used on maps to distinguish it from the adjacent community ofBedford which had been founded by members of the same family some years earlier. In 1890, most of Bedford Township including Upper Arlington were annexed by Columbus. As a result, Upper Arlington became an independent municipality with its own police force and voting system while Bedford continued to be part of Columbus municipal government. The annexation made sense given that both towns were growing rapidly and needed more housing than could be found within their respective borders. In 2002, Upper Arlington merged with nearby Newark to form one large city called Newark-Upper Arlington which still retains its own police department and governing body today

Upper Arlington is a town in the northwest corner of Ohio, and the county seat of Ross County. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron, OH-KY-IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Upper Arlington were French traders and missionaries on their way to trade with the Shawnees in 1701. A post office called Upper Arlington was established in 1792, and saw growth from its initial population of two to a peak population of 10,000 in 1824. The Panic of 1837 destroyed much business activity in the area, which would not return to high levels until after World War II when new businesses began sprouting up throughout western Ohio due to easy access to transport and markets. Today, Upper Arlington continues as an important economic center for Ross County with its strong manufacturing base including several companies that produce agricultural products such as ConAgra Foods Inc., Cargill Inc., Tyson Foods Inc., JBS Ammonia Company LLC., DSM AG sow materials (eager farmer feed), Midland Dairy LLC., Northern Trust Bancorporation (NTV) In 1840 Lower Arlington Township was organized from what had been part of Upper Arlington Township; it also included present-day Scioto Township east of I‑70 exit 15A (the present day border between Lucas County and Stark County). In 1847 Berlin Township was organized from Lower Arlington Township; it also included present-day Highland Heights Borough. The townships were abolished by 1880 when all but one were combined into Ross County under one government administration. By 1908 there were only three townships remaining: Lower Arlington, Highland Heights and Berlin; these had all been amalgamated into Ross County by then. In 1907 a land bank organization was established withinRossCounty which purchased 640 acres around what is now Quicken Loans Arena from Dayton Steel Corporation for $1 million dollars ($10 million today). This land bank provided funds for schools, roads and other civic improvements in Upper Arlington while giving rise to the name “The Land Bank” today. With this purchase came responsibility for maintaining public roads through upper Arlington village as well as providing funding for local projects such as water systems etc….. After years of negotiations various annexation proposals failed due largely to lack thereof support from nearby municipalities….In 1959 both Greenfield annexed Lower Arlington while Harrisonburg annexed Highland Heights creating yet another city sized area….In 1962 rural areas east & northeast of I‑70 took advantageof annexation offers being made by other municipalities w/o any fear that they would be left out…… settlement continued apace w/out any formal annexation agreements being reached until 1980s when 1st US District Court ordered unification & incorporation proceedings began
Upper Arlington was founded in 1795 by Captain James Fisk and his wife, Anne. The town was named for the Arlington Heights neighborhood of Philadelphia, which Captain Fisk had homesteaded. Upper Arlington's first post office was established in 1806. In 1812, the village of Upper Arlington became a city and was renamed Philadelphia.
