Upper Arlington is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio that is located on the southern edge of Cleveland, about 20 miles east of the city center. The population was 11,884 as of the 2010 census. Upper Arlington is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area and is home to Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), one of America's largest private universities. The first settlers in what would become Upper Arlington were farmers who arrived from Pennsylvania in 1796. They named their community after General James Robertson, an early settler and captain in the American Revolution who had served with distinction at Fort George Wright in Canada. In 1814, a group of investors formed a company to purchase 2,000 acres (800 ha) near what is now Lower Arlington Heights for $10 per acre (4 ha). This land became known as "The Hill". The original village was built on this site between 1824 and 1830 by John Prentice and his brother-in-law Solomon Northrop. In 1837, President Andrew Johnson visited Upper Arlington while he was campaigning for reelection and ordered all military posts within 10 miles be closed because he felt they were being used to quench political rivalries instead of serving their country legitimately. He also noted that many people living there worked for government jobs rather than farming or raising children since most homes lacked indoor plumbing then. In 1849, when Ohio became a state, Upper Arlington voted to secede from Indiana because its governor refused to recognize slavery inside Ohio even though it constitutionally qualified as a form of property ownership under the United States Constitution. The vote resulted in a loss for Indiana but helped prompt President Franklin D Roosevelt to call for an end to slavery throughout all American states during his New Deal speech delivered on November 3, 1941 in Philadelphia – one week before Columbus day – which finally ended slavery throughout America on December 12th that year when Abraham Lincoln signed legislation into law ending Slavery in America(Preamble To The Top). During World War II many upper Arlington residents participated actively in the war effort by working at various munitions plants across central Ohio including giving blood donations or serving with local units such as Company H (the 6th Infantry Regiment), 116th Airborne Division or 326th Tank Battalion commanded by Lt Col Leslie Jantzinger USAAF flying Spitfires over Normandy during Operation Overlord; later commando operations behind enemy lines against organized resistance etc.; some 100 residents died heroismously fighting against evil Axis forces during those conflicts including Lt Col Jantzinger credited with singlehandedly leading a tank attack upon Nazi positions deep inside Europe - featured prominently on PBS documentaryOperation Neptune’s Spear . Upper Arlington is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 10,542 at the 2010 census. Upper Arlington is located in the eastern portion of Stark County and is bordered by Bedford to the north and west, North Olmsted to the east, Highfield to the south, and Brookline to the southeast. The first permanent white settler in what is now Upper Arlington was David Wilmot who arrived in 1796. He founded a small community on the edge of what are now Bedford Township and Highfield Township. By 1810 there were six families living in Lower Arlington. Stephen Foster bought land near where Upper Arlington stands today for $1,200 cash in 1825. In 1827 he donated his land along Delaware Avenue to Upper Arlington residents as a town square measuring 2 acres (0.8 hectare). In 1830 John Fenton platted Lower Arlington township which included Upper Arlington east of Delaware Avenue including much of what is now Midtown Columbus today. When Ohio became a state in 1837 it included part of Stark County so Fenton's donation was re-granted and Lower Arlington became an independent township with its own government and courthouse which stood until 1870 when it merged into Upper Arlington's government again under one roof On July 14th 1870 commissioners from both towns met at Park Hall (now home of Hughes Academy) on Delaware Avenue fora special session called because both towns had amalgamated into one entity under new laws passed that year by Governor Thomas Mifflin . After voting 3-2 favor for merger Commissioners David Wilmot and John Gorman decided against it citing their dislike of each other's governments as well as financial problems they felt Upper Arlington would face if merged with such a small town as Bedford had been . The two communities continued to exist separately but within their own boundaries until they merged again effective November 1st 1870 becoming one large municipality with jurisdiction over all parts of Stark County east of I-75
