In 1892, the United States Army was founded. At that time, there were only a few hundred soldiers in Ohio. However, over time, the army grew and became one of the most important branches of the U.S. government. Today, more than 100,000 soldiers are stationed in Ohio alone. The army has a long history in Upper Arlington and its members have donated many items to the community including military equipment, clothing and even furniture. One of the most popular army gifts is an artillery piece called a howitzer. This gift has been used by both the military and civilians to help shoot off fireworks at Fourth of July celebrations or just enjoy a peaceful evening out with friends. The first howitzer was bought by George Washington Cushing in 1800 for $1,200. It wasn’t until 1903 that Ohio began exporting howitzers to other states. In 1915, General John J Pershing ordered all American forces across Europe to start using cannons instead of rifles due to World War I stalemates on the battlefields overseas. As a result, Upper Arlington became home to one of America’s original artillery units – Company A (1) 9th Infantry Regiment (4-inch). Over time this unit underwent many name changes and finally came into being as Company A 1st Battalion (3-inch) – 6th Armor Infantry Regiment during World War II under command of Major General Smedley Butler III who helped win worldwide fame for his role as “vilified general” during World War II when he led Allied forces against Nazi Germany’s Panzer divisions on open terrain at Normandy beaches! Today there are over 2 million active duty soldiers and police officers serving throughout Ohio with nearly 200 battalion headquarters located in Upper Arlington alone! With such an extensive history within our community – it only makes sense that we would celebrate Army gift history here at Upper Arlington Historical Society! We will be exploring every aspect of this branch of service from pre-war times through today’s latest weaponry and technology! Our goal is not only to provide you with information about these items but also learn more about our residents who have made their mark within this branch of service!

Upper Arlington is a small town in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It takes its name from Arlington Heights, a neighboring town that was merged into Upper Arlington in 1923.
The first settler in what is now Upper Arlington was John Chapman who arrived on March 25, 1814 and built the first house on the present site of Upper Arlington Township. He named his home "Hancock" after General David Hancock of Massachusetts who had fought with Washington at Yorktown. In 1829, George Head purchased the land east of what is now Lower Arlington and moved to what would become Upper Arlington Township; he named his new township "Head".
In 1863, Landon Crawford bought 640 acres (248 hectares) north of Lower Arlington Township and moved to what would become Upper Arlington Township. In 1865 he founded Crawford & Co., one of the most successful early American businesses. Crawford still operates as a shipping company today with locations in Columbus and Cincinnati.
The first post office in Lower Arlington was established on December 17, 1825 by Joshua Harker under the name "Richardson".
