Upper Arlington is a town in the Greater Cleveland region of Ohio, United States. The population was 24,746 at the 2010 census. Upper Arlington is one of six municipalities in Lake County and is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village of Beavercreek was annexed by Upper Arlington in 1957. Upper Arlington was founded as a small community on the Scioto River east of present-day Akron, by Dutch settlers during the early 17th century. In 1814, when Ohio became a state, Upper Arlington was incorporated as an independent town and named after Pennsylvania General John Forbes Ulysses S. Grant had been elected president that year and traveled through northern Ohio to survey land for his new state. The first Postmaster general of Ohio resided in Upper Arlington from 1815 until his death in 1827; during this time period it also served as an important stop on stagecoach routes between Akron and Philadelphia or New York City and other points westward. In 1825, Lower Arlington joined Upper Arlington as a separate town due to pressure from residents of the former village who were fearful that their towns would be destroyed if they separated from each other again politically or culturally (the two towns had been separately governed since 1800). In 1910, Lower Arlington merged with neighboring Beavercreek to form one municipality under the name "Upper Arlington". The area now known as Upper Arlington was first settled in the late 1800s by Americans of European descent. The name came from a nearby creek, which became known as the "Upper Arlington Creek". In 1814, the town of Delhi were founded in what is now Upper Arlington. In 1825, Lower Arlington was established to the east of Upper Arlington and it slowly grew into its present size. The population of Lower Arlington reached 10,000 by 1830. By 1845, there were over 25,000 people living in Upper Arlington and its surroundings. The town's growth stopped after World War II because much of the land that currently makes up Upper Arlington was annexed by Westchester County.
