The University Heights Coffee House, which was started in 1907 by Professor John D. Rockefeller and his wife Alice, is one of the oldest continuous coffeehouses in the United States. It has been closed for about a year and a half due to new regulations from Starbucks, but reopened on October 17th with fresh coffee beans from Colombia.
University Heights is a town in the Cincinnati metropolitan area, located about 15 miles (24 km) east of downtown and about 25 miles (40 km) north of the University of Cincinnati. The population was 20,812 at the 2010 census. The settlement began as a small cluster of homes on a hill from which locals watched the city grow. In 1892, local businessmen built what is now known as Case Western Reserve University’s first building on College Hill. By 1916, UH had become one of Ohio’s leading universities with its main campus in Northsideville. In that same year, UH opened its doors to students from all around Ohio and Kentucky; today it remains one of America’s most comprehensive universities with campuses in Akron, Canton, Columbus, Cleveland Heights/Summit View and Toledo. In 1968-69 UH became part of the larger City Colleges system in Ohio and through this change saw many new additions to its student body including African American students who had long been absent from higher education in their own right or face exclusion at other colleges and universities in their home states. Today over 40% of undergraduate students are women and over 60% are minorities – making UH one of America’s most inclusive institutions. The Townsquare Shopping Center project close by has led to increased development nearby but much work still needs to be done such as completing streetscapes for both University Hills neighborhood adjacent to town square which currently lack any curb appeal or symmetry while also adding sidewalks & bike lanes near I-675 exit

The first college to be established in University Heights was Western Reserve College, which opened its doors in 1886. Penney Co., Swift & Company (a leading manufacturer of books and magazines), Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company (now part of UnitedHealthcare), and PPG Industries (now part of PPL). University Heights was a small town in the northwestern part of Ohio, located about 15 miles north-northwest of Cleveland. The town was founded in 1825 by three men, Alexander Caldwell, Abraham Burruss and James Ladd. It grew rapidly after it was created from part of the former village of University Heights on the eastern side of old University Hill. At its peak, the town had a population of around 100 people. The township's growth slowed after 1830 because there were few opportunities for agriculture in the area. However, it continued to grow due to lumbering and other businesses that developed in nearby Mansfield and Peru Streets NW. In 1868, University Heights' last resident died; however, it continued to grow economically until the early 21st century when it experienced significant decline. In 2000, University Heights was merged with neighbouring townships to form Cleveland Township.
