University Heights, Ohio is a city in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 15,337 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Medina County. The site of University Heights was chosen as the location for what would later be called America's first college town in 1835 by Horace Mann and James K. Polk when they were president and vice president of United States, respectively. In 1836, trustees of Muskingum College voted to move from Lima to become the new center for higher education in the region. In 1840-41, land was purchased at the intersection of State Road 7 and I-Highway 177 in University Heights for $5 per acre (1/4 mile²). The community grew rapidly with an influx of students from rural areas nearby who had heard about American colleges opening up in Pennsylvania and New York City. By 1845, there were over 100 residents living on campus at Muskingum College alone. In 1861–1862 during the American Civil War, Ulysses S. Grant occupied Columbus while he served as President Ulysses S. Grant & General Secretary Stanton made decisions affecting education policy within their respective administrations which led to increased enrollment opportunities for Muskingum College students seeking ways to contribute militarily to their country during wartime whether that meant fighting on the battlefield or providing learning materials both on campus and offcampus to support military training programs sanctioned by their colleges; some students even volunteered services such as arms manufacturing or driving wagons full of supplies around central Ohio countryside so soldiers could rest without having anything spoilage while stationed there; many university towns quickly became centers for munitions production due to this trend although University Heights did not achieve National Monument status until 1943 following designation by then Education Secretary Harrison Gray Otis because "it does not contain any nationally important archaeological sites." When the United States Army was founded in 1775, it had a small force of only 2,500 soldiers. The first unit to be raised in the new nation was the 1st Infantry Regiment. University Heights is a small town in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. University Heights has been home to a number of schools including Medina High School and Central High School. The Town of University Heights was organized on November 3, 1872 by vote of its citizens. On July 9, 1886, it became part of the new township of Euclid. In 1934 it became the separate municipality of University Heights with a population of 2,239 people. On December 15, 1912 Township trustees voted to change its name to University Heights because "the people in that locality have become so well-versed in higher education that they desire to be identified with that institution." The name stuck and has been used ever since by the townspeople themselves or by reference since 1938 when Euclid Township changed its name back to Univision Township (the original spelling). The current municipality boundaries were established on June 14th 2018 when Univision Township merged into University Heights via an annexation vote. The town was named after the university, which then occupied the site of the current University Heights Shopping Center. In 1814, Professor Vail donated land to the college on which today's Ohio State University stands. The first students arrived in 1815 and intermingled with local residents until a permanent structure was completed in 1817. The original building served as both an academy and library before becoming the home of Ohio State's main administration from its inception until 1922. Today, it remains a designated historical landmark and is open to visitors for tours daily from 9am-4pm.
