The first organized football team in Troy was fielded in 1875, and it played its first game against nearby Mentor. In 1907, the city of Troy built their first Municipal Stadium which served as home to the town's teams until 1970. The following year, the stadium was replaced by nearby Memorial Stadium which still serves as the home of Troy High School's football program today. In 1951, Allison Polytechnic Institute (later Regent University) moved from Akron to Troy and began offering training courses in engineering and technology. This led to a significant increase in enrollment at Regent University over time; by 2002, it had become one of America's leading engineering schools. Additionally, during this time period, Troy also became known for its annual Heisman Trophy halftime show presented by Chevrolet. In 2003-2004, renovations were made to Memorial Stadium which included new fields (including one that can be used for baseball), an additional multi-purpose room for use as a gymnasium/multi-sport center, and plans to add a new basketball court and soccer field within the next few years. These renovations helped preserve Historic Memorial Stadium as both an important part of local history and an asset for future community development. Today, many people consider Troy their "second home."
