Trotwood is a town in Trumbull County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from a grant given by President George Washington to Major General John Campbell in 1796. Trotwood is located on the southern border of Trumbull County and is bordered by body of water called the trotting stream. The first settler in Trotwood was Captain David Rankin who arrived in 1799. Captain Rankin's family moved to what is now Trotwood from near Portsmouth, New Hampshire about two years later. Mrs. Rankin's father had been granted a tract of land by President George Washington for his service as an Indian fighter during the French and Indian War (1794-95). The Rankins were one of many early settlers in Trumbull County and were soon among the most influential citizens thereof. In 1802, Major General John Campbell gave Trott Woodland Township to Mr. Rankin upon his retirement from military life due to age or illness; rank having no legal standing under Pennsylvania law at that time. In 1809 Samuel Moody settled on a parcel of land east of present day Highway 12 west of where US-127 crosses into Trumbull County He set up a sawmill and gristmill here which operated until 1840 when he sold it to Drury & Noble who then donated it to Stroudsburg Methodist Episcopal Church which erected a new church here in 1847 with funding provided by James Krieger (a native son turned banker) and others associated with Stroudsburg merchants families including Daniel Webster Sr., James Krieger Jr., John Quincy Adams Sr., Nicholas Murray Butler and others instrumental in developing what is now downtown Stroudsburg into one of America's largest commercial districts during its early nineteenth century heyday centered around three large blocks bounded north/south between First Avenue North and Main Street East

Trotwood is a small town in the West Virginia coal country, located about 35 miles northwest of Harrisonburg. It was founded in 1819 by George Trotwood and his family. The community has a population of just under 1,000 people as of 2009. Trotwood was named after George Trotwood, a Revolutionary War veteran and landowner who donated 4 acres (1 hectare) to the town in 1819. The original town hall was built on this site. In 1926, the town added a second building on Cemetery Road for public schools and social services. The Trotwoods were instrumental in establishing Trotwood as an agricultural center during the early 20th century. They raised horses, cows, pigs, corn, wheat and hay for local markets and exported these products to Pittsburgh and other cities. The Trotwoods also operated a small grocery store until it closed in 1951. Today, much of the commercial activity takes place around the library which opened in 1978. The library provides free borrowing privileges for locals and offers many services such as research materials for history classes and genealogy searches.
