Trotwood was then a small farming community and artillery donations were not common. The first cannon to be donated in greater detail was a howitzer from British munitions company Royal Ordnance Factory at Bradford, Pennsylvania in 1814. From 1825 through 1860, Trotwood had an arsenal. The first military installation in Trotwood was Fort Snelling (later known as Camp Chase) on Main Street near the present-day high school site in 1830. The fort served as a training ground for local militias during the Indian Removal Crisis of 1830-1839 and also played an important role in the defense of Cincinnati during that time period. It is interesting to note that Camp Chase was only one of many early military installations dotting the tri-state area; other notable sites include West Point on Long Island (built 1836), Canandaigua soldiers barracks on Elmira Road off Route 422 (opened 1840), Ft Wayne IN's Fort Dearborn (1846-48), and Indianapolis' Fort Meade (1853). In 1861, whenTrotwood became part of Hamilton County, Ohio, its arsenal became part of what is now called Indiana Arsenal Complex within Lucas Heights Naval Air Station/Marine Corps Base east of downtown Columbus. This complex includes two buildings: Maryland Armory which housed artillery pieces dating back to 1798 and Thayer's Arsenal which housed rifles dating back to 1812. After being closed for several years due to budgetary cuts made by Defense Secretary Robert Morrill during World War I, Lucas Heights NAS/Marine Corps Base reopened it as an NRA airfield fighter squadron base under new management from 1936 until 1943 when it reverted back to naval use as Lucas Heights NAS/Marine Corps Base again under Defense Department control. Inactivated Marinecorps personnel transferred their equipment here from USMC Camp Dennison on Rickenbacker Field outside Dayton OH beginning 1942 untilactivation ended following World War II. Trotwood is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,549 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1824 by surveyors and traders who were looking for a site for their new trading post on the Scioto River. They named it after Colonel John Trotwood, an Englishman who had been instrumental in developing what is now Cleveland. The first store and post office opened in 1828. Trotwood grew rapidly during the antebellum period as settlers arrived from all over the United States to sections of Ohio lying near the Scioto River. In 1836, the town was incorporated as a village and became a city in 1850. Tensions increased when Cleveland annexed Trotwood in 1854 and renamed it after itself; however, Trotwood retained its own governance until becoming part of Columbus on July 1, 1907. In 1870, Trotwood built its first schoolhouse which still stands today and remains one of the town's most notable landmarks. The building also served as Trotwood's first courthouse from 1893 until 1979 when it moved to nearby Delaware Street.
