Trotwood is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,965 at the 2010 census. Trotwood is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH metropolitan area. The town was laid out by Nicholas Trotwood in 1814. It was named for him and his wife Deborah (née DeWitt). Trotwood built a mill on the White River in 1817 and became a full member of theMuskingum County Republican Party in 1821. He served as postmaster from 1824 to 1830 and again from 1839 to 1840. In 1865, Trotwood was annexed by Cleveland and became part of that city's inner ring suburb of East Cleveland. In 1971, it reverted back to its original status as an unincorporated community within Muskingum County.
The name Trotwood is derived from the Susquehanna River. The first settler in Trotwood was John Shuttleworth, who arrived on a ferry from Newtown, Pennsylvania in 1792. He and his family built a log cabin on the riverbank and named it after their home town of Stratford, Connecticut. Trotwood became a village in 1826 when it was incorporated as part of the new township of Willoughby. It consolidated with other villages in Willoughby Township during the early years of Prohibition.
