Trenton is located on the southern edge of Youngstown–Warren–Berlin Township and is bordered to the north by Akron and to the east by Canton. The first Europeans to visit what is now Trenton were French missionaries in 1686. In 1814, when land was donated by John Fennimore Cooper for college use, town site James Dunlap donated much more land including what is now Trenton Square (now home to several businesses). The Townsite Act passed by Congress organized township form with a meeting house on July 14th, 1815. At this time there were only 10 settlers in town limits which included most of today's wards 1 through 3 as well as Dunlap's half mile square from Water Street eastward to Canal Street. In 1826 local farmers petitioned for township status; their request was granted on December 12th followed by an election held January 7th resulting in selectmen being elected with Wm Hickey (later appointed Mayor) as chairman and Pte John Maynard as secretary/treasurer/valet de chambre
