Trenton was founded in 1826 as part of the Northwest Territory. The city was named for James Trenton, a U.S. Senator from New Jersey and an early leader of the Republican Party. Trenton became a municipality in 1871 and took its current name in 1945 after its incorporation into Mercer County. The city is located on the border of Delaware and New York states, bordered by Delaware Township to the east, Butler Township to the west, and Scioto Township to the northwest.

Trenton, Ohio is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,461 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Trenton area has been inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years and was first settled by Europeans in 1795. Trenton was incorporated as a village in 1827 and became a city in 1902. The current mayor is Democrat Frank Gavitt (D). The town of Trenton developed on the site of an ancient Shawnee village known as Waning Sun Settlement. One early settler, James Caldwell, named his new community after General George Washington's home state of Virginia where he had recently moved from Indiana. In 1802, American Fur trader John Jacob Astor founded the Astor House Hotel hereabouts to serve traders traveling through this region on their way to or from China and Japan. By 1830 there were more than 100 white people living in Trenton according to its first plat book; however most of these had come since its incorporation as a village two years earlier. At that time it was one of several small villages along the Mohawk River that formed what would become Cleveland Township with boundaries defined only by water courses and lineages rather than by geographic features such as hills or valleys. Explorers beginning coming into our territory seeking information about what lay ahead found nothing but pristine forests… Many brave pioneers went out into these woods wearing no clothes but hunting wild game... Those who dared ventured out wore full dress uniforms like gentlemen do today! When word got back home about what happened westward we realized how dangerous it could be & quickly started organizing our defenses... On October 10TH 1814 while marching thru Xenia they meta party led by Captain Isaac Backus numbering 50 warriors consisting mostly Seneca nation Indians led by Chief Joseph Warren giving them quite a scare! During skirmish Captains Backus killed 3 men including 2 whites…. Just prior to this encounter 4 white men were killed southeast Of Xenia playing around without molesting any natives… Aftermath settlers began calling Captains Backus' party 'The Scary Crew' because they seemed so determined not to let us get away cleanly
