The first coffee beans to be roasted in Trenton, Ohio were from the Montero Coffee company. In 1912, Italian immigrants Giovanni and Olga Montaro started a small grocery store in Trenton. They bought two acres of land on Superior Street and began to roast coffee. The Montaros named their coffee "Trenton." In 1913, the first Trenton Roastery was opened by Luigi Anelli. He purchased some of the best Arabica beans from Italy and brought them back to Trenton for roasting.

Trenton is located on the Scioto River just upstream from Cleveland and across the river from Pittsburgh. The first European to visit what is now Trenton was Captain John Smith in 1624 when he explored the region for potential fur trade opportunities. One of Trenton's earliest settlers was Nicholas Kline, who arrived in 1795 and founded a small town on his farmstead known as Klineville. In 1803, General William Tecumseh Sherman attacked Fort Pitt while marching through Mercer County during his campaign against Native Americans, resulting in the Treaty of Greenville being signed at Trenton that day. The city became part of Cleveland after it seceded from Ohio in 1912. It has been home to many notable people including Ulysses S. Grant, Arthur Ashe, and LeBron James Sr.. In 1916 Edward Everett Hale served as Mayor; he later became a U.S Senator from Ohio and also authored an influential book about American government entitled "The Commonwealth: A Study in Government".
