Trenton, Ohio is a town in Wayne County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,441 at the 2010 census. Trenton was founded in 1814 by Nicholas Trenton and is the oldest continuously inhabited municipality in Wayne County. Trenton is located on the southern edge of the Unites States Midwest region and bordered by Summit Township to the north, Ottawa Township to the east, Clinton Township to the south, and Muskingum Township to the west. It lies within ZIP Code 46301. The town of Trenton has been home to a variety of cultures since its founding: Native Americans lived here before European settlers arrived; both German and Italian immigrants settled here during and after World War II; while African Americans have lived here throughout its history. Today, Trenton is one of several small townships in Wayne County that are considered “minority-majority” communities because more than 50% of its residents are people who identify as Black or Hispanic ethnicity. The community began as an agricultural village near what is now Muskingum Heights Shopping Center on Route 30/Rte 2 (now Airport Rd.), which had been settlements along this route for many years before it was surveyed for a road connection between Athensburg on the lower Ohio River Valley and Washingtonville on Lake Erie in 1796. After surveying all of present-day Wayne County, Nicholas Trenton named his new settlement after himself – Trenton Heights – because he felt that there could be no other suitable name for it until then. He also distributed land among his fellow pioneer colonists with a view towards developing it into a self-sufficient Village or Town so that they might be able to support themselves without dependant upon external sources of revenue or assistance from others. In 1814 when James Kieft bought 1/2 acre (0.16 km2)of land south of what is now Northwest Parkway off US Highway 12 near today's US Highway 19W called "Trenton" from Nicholas Trenton for $200 ($ per acre), he became one of about 10 settlers who followed suit soon thereafter to found their own villages or towns along this stretch where wagon roads linked these locations together forming what would become known as midwestern America's "railroad belt." Many farmers brought their animals overland across Indian Territory (later Oklahoma) via what are now Ulysses S Grant Boulevard (Ulysses S Grant Parkway) & SR 810 eastbound & SR 920 westbound just south of today's I-75 exit #5A just South Of The Akron Municipal Airport boundary line which formed part of Ft Knox State University owned property including much later Northeast Pike Estates housing developments Lots 16 thru 20B - current day Centerville Road @ Youghiogheny Drive intersection - developed primarily by Polish American families originally from eastern Ukraine prior to World War II when most Ukrainians left their homes due to Russian military occupation & political instability following Bolshevik seizure control over Kiev government
In 1814, the first white man to set foot in Trenton was John Trent who arrived with a group of pioneers from Ohio. The town was founded on the site of present day Trenton Township, about three miles northeast of the present-day city of Cleveland. In 1830, it became part of the new state of Ohio and was renamed by Governor William Henry Harrison as "Trenton." The township seat moved from downtown to Trenton in 1868. It was destroyed by a fire in 1915 and its replacement, declined for much the same reasons. Trenton has had many businesses over the years including: an insurance company (1893), a flour mill (1911), and a cheese factory (1964). The current movie theater complex opened in 2006 and is home to several restaurants including Jardin Chinese Bistro and Park Tavern Fishmarket.
