It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Toledo's rich history goes back to its founding by French colonists in 1796 as Point State Park on the southern edge of present-day Toledo Township, which was then part of Wexford County. Kossuth Ives served as president pro tem during its construction; Hubbard was mayor from 1830 to 1840; Painter was treasurer from 1840 to 1850; and Romney was superintendent from 1850 until his death in 1860. Jewelers store)--all associated with various businesses which closed down or moved out during different phases of their lives throughout those years.. When General Dunlap took command of Union Forces marching south across central Michigan in April 1863 he ordered all commercial buildings within 1 mile radius destroyed “so that no[one] may hereafter establish themselves thereabouts by means either OF Trade ORsolicitude [sic]” ().
