Toledo is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. Work on developing downtown included demolishing old buildings along Queen Street between Main and State Streets so that development could be centered around a new street grid with open streets characteristic of Midwestern cities then being built such as Cleveland Heights or Detroit MI . Toledo, Ohio is a city in the United States. The population was 61,970 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Lucas County. Toledo proper includes the University of Toledo and surrounding neighborhoods on the eastern side of downtown. The current form of Toledo began to be built up around 1812 as an agricultural town on Mud Creek, about northwest of what is now downtown Toledo. In 1814, James K. Polk was elected President of the United States, and his brother John C. Polk became Secretary of War; both were from Toledo. They founded the First National Bank in downtown Toledo in 1816 and made it one of America's first national banks.[2] In 1827, General Andrew Jackson was chosen by popular vote as President pro tempore of the United States Senate; he had been nominated by John Quincy Adams but lost to Jackson[3]. On January 3, 1830,[4], Jackson signed into law "The Second Treaty Between Great Britain and France Relative to Navigation with Respect tothe Mississippi River" which authorized British navigation downriver towards Detroit via Fort Dearborn (later renamed Detroit). This treaty also established a line between Canada and Louisiana that ran through present-day Michigan; this line has been calledchoes back to French traders who explored this area in 1669[5] . In 1830–1831,[6] Henry Clay fought two bitter campaigns against incumbent Governor Simon Cameron for election to Congress from Kentucky’s Third District – part then within today’s Cleveland County – over issues including land reform (against Clay’s father), slavery (against fellow Congressman Samuel Morse), currency reform (in support of metallic specie theory) – all important topics during this time period[7][8][9]. When Clay failed in each campaign he set off for home “a broken man” according to contemporary reporters[10]; however he soon rebuilt himself politically as a powerful legislator inside Congress while continuing his anti-corruption work outside it [11]. He even defeated another candidate for reelection after turning tricks on election night! November 6th 1840 saw him defeat James Buchanan handily despite being $1 million less funded than Buchanan ($191M vs $323M)[12][13]. One reason why Clay became such an effective legislator during these difficult times may have been his innovative thinking which included proposing new laws based upon data collected from surveys or hearings rather than reading instructions from political rivals or lobbyists like many other legislators did at that time [14][15]. In 1845–1846,[16] Abraham Lincoln was born in Springfield Township, Indiana Territory; he would later become President Ulysses S. Grant countrywide when he won office following Ulysses S. Grant's successful military campaigns against Sherman's army invading Missouri & Kansas Territories during Reconstruction Period 1865-1868
Toledo was founded in 1795 by American General George Washington and his aide-de-camp, Colonel John Stark. The city's first permanent settler was Nicholas Biddle, who arrived in 1797. In 1814, the United States acquired Toledo from the Republic of Mexico for $20,000. The city became a U.S. territory following the Mexican–American War and it received its own seat on the United States Congress in 1828. In 1837, Toledo annexed the neighboring town of Stroudsburg to its boundaries as part of an effort to grow the city's population beyond 100,000 people; however, this annexation did not result in a significant increase in population until after World War II when waves of immigrants arrived from southern Europe and other parts of the world. In 1907, Toledo began construction on what is now known as Riverfront Park which would become one of the largest public works projects undertaken in Ohio during that period; it was completed twenty years later at a cost of $135 million dollars.
