Coffee was first grown in Toledo, Ohio, in the early 1800s. Coffee beans were brought over by Spanish traders and used to produce espresso. The first coffee house in Toledo was called the Don Carlos store. In 1824, a man named John Fenton opened a store called the Forest Café on Market Street. Some of the first coffee drinks that were served at this location included Italian mocha and flan. In 1830, a man named George Washington bought a small plot of land off of Temple Street and began to grow coffee trees. This location is now known as Washington Square Park. In 1835, Mr. Fenton's son Isaac founded another store called The Gilded Cage on Market Street which became one of the most popular coffee houses in town. By 1840, Toledo had six coffee houses operating including The Gilded Cage, The Globe Cafe, The Fox & Hound Tavern, The Brown House Hotel and The National Coffee Company Warehouse on Griggs Avenue.)

The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Toledo were French traders and missionaries who founded Fort Erie on Lucas Island in 1795. In 1813, General George Washington's army passed through central Ohio during its campaign against Native Americans and ordered General David Wilkinson to build a road from Detroit to Cincinnati through Toledo. After Wilkinson was murdered by Indians near Battle Creek in 1814, his boss at Little Rock Army Depot Colonel Anthony Wayne took control of the project and completed it without further orders from Washington. Over time, other groups arrived including Germans (the Volga Germans) and Irishmen (the Tyrone Poles). Beginning in earnest on July 4th, 1870 – four days after American independence – settlement began by both groups as different factions fought for control over land that would become present-day Toledo. By 1880, there were more than 30 languages spoken within 1 kilometer of downtown streets! Today’s diversity can be seen throughout much of downtown: neighborhoods full of Italianate architecture are clustered around large Catholic churches; Polish-American business owners line State Street between Elmira Heights and Saginaw Township; African Americans have long inhabited Woodward Avenue “just south”of Race Street; while majority-Latino businesses exist along Center Streets north of Asbury Park Boulevard. Downtown areas are also known for their eclectic mix of art galleries, eateries, bars/restaurants etc., making it onestop destination for anyone interested in Old World culture or sound bites from across North America

Today, Toledo is a city of over 200,000 people in the U.S. state of Ohio and the second most populous city in the region after Cleveland, Ohio. It was previously known as Paris on the Great Lakes, founded by French Canadians in 1813 as a fur trade post. The area now known as Toledo was inhabited by the Algonquian-speaking Shawnee before European contact. The first Europeans to visit what is now Toledo were two Jesuit missionaries, Father George de la Salle and Father Jacques Marquette, on their way to convert the Prophet Joseph into Christianity in 1795. Spanish traders also visited the region during this time and built Fort Ontario at present-day Easton on Ottawa River in 1796. In 1801, General James Wilkinson served with General Anthony Wayne during the Invasion of Canada and became familiar with Indian Territory west of Detroit while he was stationed at Fort Dearborn near Cincinnati. He recommended that Wayne establish a militarypost near modern day Toledo so that American forces could better control this section of territory. On July 14, 1802, General Wayne approved Wilkinson’s recommendation and established Fort Yates on what is now downtown Toledo under Lieutenant Colonel John Kilpatrick. The site for today’s downtown Toledo was chosen because it had good transportation connections to other areas within America and Europe via steamboat riverboats or stagecoaches from Cincinnati and other points along the Great Lakes coastline. In 1847, Toledo was annexed by Cleveland, Ohio; however, it reverted back to Toledo in 1898 after Cleveland renamed it "The City of Commerce." In 1941, during World War II, Toledo played an important role in the Battle of Charny Ridge when its troops helped lead efforts against German forces. After the war ended, Toledo experienced rapid growth as a manufacturing center with many new factories opening up. Today, Toledo is one of the most vibrant cities in Ohio and has become a major cultural and economic center within Greater Cincinnati area.
