Toledo's history dates back to 1795 when French Canadian traders founded a trading post on land that became known as the site of present-day Toledo. In 1803, the United States bought this land from France for $5 million dollars and renamed it Fort Wayne after General Anthony Wayne who had fought in both world wars; Toledo became an important seaport for America during this time. In 1836, local entrepreneurs built what would become known as The State Capitol at Fifth and Elm Streets (now called Washington Square), which served as the government center for much of central Ohio until 1845 when Congress moved downtown to buildings at First and Fifth Streets sqd., now Public Square. The late 19th century was a time when Toledo experienced rapid growth due to heavy industry such as machine shops, breweries, porkpacking plants, tire factories and other businesses. This growth led to social unrest which was exacerbated by redlining policies that discriminated against black people in Toledo by limiting lending opportunities to African Americans while increasing access for white people.
