The Toledo Army National Guard was organized on July 4, 1795. The first unit to be raised in the city was Company A of the 12th Ohio Regiment. In 1803, when the United States acquired Oregon from Britain, the Toledo Regiment was mustered into federal service and served as part of the 1st Volunteers Infantry Brigade under General Winfield Scott. In 1814, when Tecumseh decided to attack Cincinnati, General Winfield Scott ordered his brigade to take up defensive positions along the Scioto River. As night fell, Company K of the Toledo regiment arrived reinforcements and attacked Tecumseh's column with artillery and rifle fire. This successful engagement helped turn back Tecumseh's attempt to cross over the river and threaten Cincinnati. On December 5, 1814, a detachment from Company D of Toledo's 1st battalion fought at Fallen Timbers against Native Americans led by Chief Miami. This battle is often hailed as one of America's most important military victories since it ended American control of that portion of Ohio west of Lake Erie. After this victory over Native Americans, Company D became known as "The Black Hacks." In 1815-1816 the army was mobilized for an invasion of Mexico but never made it past Camp Bowie because there were too many shortages in food supplies due to a series of harsh winters across much Western America during that period. In late 1815 Major John Swayne organized a company outfitted with artillery and Buffalo rifles called "The Rangers" which participated in several engagements against Apatzingo Indians before being disbanded in early November 1816 because they could not maintain enough equipment or men for an extended campaign against Spanish insurgents who had taken possession of California following Mexican defeat at Battle Of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The 2nd Infantry Regiment was redesignated as the 3rd Infantry Regiment and the 1st Battalion (Provisional) of the 3rd Infantry Regiment became part of the new 1st Battalion, Toledo Light Artillery Regiment on December 15, 1912. The regiment served in World War I and II.
