With land grants from President George Washington, General Ross founded Fort Dearborn on Brush Creek near where he later established his headquarters at West Point on Hudson River opposite New York City during American Revolutionary War days when British forces were ravagingNew England along those waters throughout most of 1781-1783. In 1802, Toledo was chosen as site for Cleveland’s new capital following victory over Tecumseh’s Shawnee Nation army at Carpentersville Creek Bridge near modern day Middletown Township boundary line within Muskegon Heights neighborhood then part of Trumbull County proper until 1812 when it became part of Lucas County under territorial control until its annexation by Toledo in 1907 including areas now within Ottawa and Middletown townships etc., adding much territory lying between what are now North Side streets (northwest corner) running NW parallel to I-275/I-670 just past current downtown Toledo limits then continuing SE along same lines into Ottawa Township thence WNW into Trumbull Co., still ending up NE near Assumption College bounds today before turning SSE finally ending up NE near downtown since incorporation about 1830
The first post office in Toledo, Ohio was established on November 3, 1824. The town of Toledo was platted in 1837 by James K. Polk and is named after the ancient city of Troy. In 1881, Toledo became a charter city and the first in Ohio to have a mayor-council form of government. The process began with the election of Mayor John W. Duffield on November 4, 1881 as part of an effort to decentralize government within the larger city. On December 6, 1911, Toledo voted to become a state capital.
