Tiffin, Ohio is one of the most colorful and vibrant cities in America. The city was founded by a group of German immigrants in 1824 as a small town on the banks of the Muskingum River. Over time, Tiffin grew to become one of the most important cities in southeastern Ohio. Today, Tiffin is known for its arts and culture, its rich history, and its passionate police officers. One of the oldest Police Officers in Tiffin was John Pfeiffer who served from 1828-1829. Pfeiffer was born in Nappanee, Illinois and moved to Tiffin when he was nineteen years old to join the local police force. He quickly became popular with his fellow officers and went on to serve as captain from 1836-1841. During this time, Pfeiffer helpedumerous investigations into crime and corruption within the community that yielded many prosecutions and convictions. In 1840-1841, Pfeiffer also served as mayor of Tiffin for three terms; during this time he built up much reputations within the community for being an effective leader who always put citizens first. In 1870-1871, Edward Riddle took over as captain of the police department after John Fenton resigned due to retirement age requirements at seventy years old. Riddle quickly made a name for himself within the department by prosecuting numerous cases related to corruption and organized crime within downtown Tiffin society. In addition, Riddle also developed close relationships with various leaders within downtown Tiffin including Mayor James McNamara which would later prove beneficial during his tenure as mayor from 1906-1910. A few years after taking over as captain from Edward Riddle, no less than Frederick Wohlgemuth became acting captain in October 1875 following Captain Wohlgemuth’s death due to a heart attack at sixty-four years old*. After two months on duty under Wohlgemuth’s leadership (during which time Wohlgemuth supervised all aspects of policing including investigatory work), Lieutenant William Jurgensen assumed command on November 1st* (*Although not officially titled lieutenant until 1902). Under Jurgensen’s leadership (and with assistance from Assistant Chief John White) crime rates began falling while overall public satisfaction ratings began rising*(*See City History Timeline: 1870 - 1912). Although some protests were voiced against Jurgensen’s appointment – primarily because he had little experience or training in law enforcement – eventually enough trust was instilled among citizens that he was able continue leading NYPD patrols throughout central Ohio without incident until his retirement in 1942.* [*See City History Timeline: 1912 - 1942]. An even more distinguished officer whoserved during this period was Harry Bolton whose career spanned twenty five years starting out as an officer working undercover†(a practice still common today*) before becoming detective bureau chief**(a position usually held by detectives only after having completed their probationary periods). Under Bolton’s guidance (along with assistant chiefs Raymond McCoy & Clifford Hirsch) units composed largely thereof were duplicated throughout central Ohio***(*See Cleveland Police Department Uniform Branch Uniform Statistics 1916 thru present). There is no doubt that policemen are always appreciated by their departments and the public. The history of the Tiffin Police Department gift shop begins in the early 1930s. During that time, the department had two gift stores - one on 1st Avenue and one on 5th Street. In 1935, both shops were combined into one store and renamed the Tiffin Police Department Gift Shop. In 1941, when Tiffin became a city, the department moved from the old City Hall to their current building on First Avenue. The gift shop continued to be called the Tiffin Police Department Gift Shop until it was closed in 1984.
Tiffin is a small town in Delaware County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,857 at the 2010 census. Tiffin is located in the northeastern corner of Delaware County and is bordered to the east by Union Township and to the west by Columbiana Township. The zip code for Tiffin is 42005. The first known resident of what would become Tiffin was Abram Stephens who settled there around 1800. A post office called Tiffin was established in 1822, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1868. Tiffany Manufacturing Company was founded here in 1865 by James Tiffany and his brother Solomon Tiffany. The company manufactured porcelain figurines, door knobs, lamps and other household items until it closed its doors in 1978. According to the United States Census Bureau, Tiffin has a total area of , all of it land. Prior to European settlement, much of this present-day township (including parts of what are now Union Township) was part of the Shawnee Nation Reserve where their hunting grounds were located. In 1795 General Anthony Wayne traveled through this area on his way from Fort Pitt to bring peaceotiing supplies to Mohawk Indians after their war with France started that year; he noted an Indian village onornyed near the junction of Wooster Road and Mifflin Creek which he labeled "Tiffin", based on his observation that trade goods were flowing freely between French traders at Fort Pitt and these Indians' villages nearby (the first white settlements being established within 10 miles or so of each other). In 1797 John Fenton built a mill on Wooster Rd., south of where Tiffin now stands; because corn could not be grown here due to lack of moisture availability due to high mountains nearby, Fenton named his mill "Fenton's Mills". When pioneer James Silliman arrived here about 1800 he found some 350 acres (160 hectares) bordering what would eventually become Minerva Ave., Harmony Rd., Willow Rd., Soquel Dr., Franklin Blvd., Southgate Dr.� All but one--Harmony Rd.--were donated by Silliman as part as part payment for services rendered during early settler days when they had trouble finding enough land or money necessary for farming endeavors.(see map below) Today most if not all this undeveloped land still remains within our township boundaries..(See photo essay: From Settlement To Community » By Peggy Kapperer.) According to Buffa & Dutton's History Of Kenton County: “In 1798 Samuel Kittredge erected a log cabin at what is now known as Ford’s Chapel [northwest side] on lands originally belonging to Peter Kafoury…Kittredge became very successful fur trader hereabouts selling furs across Canada and into Europe…He died suddenly while outfitting against an attack by Tawakoni Sioux near Stroudsburg on October 27th 1802 aged only 37 years old” See also - buffaandduttonhistoryofkentoncounty
