Tiffin is known for its manufacturing sector and its role in American history. The town was founded by families who were descendants of English immigrants who came to America in 1814. Tiffin became a U.S. city in 1907 and has since been one of the most important municipalities within Greater Cleveland metropolitan area. In 1814, there were only 7 families living in Tiffin when 168 new British immigrants landed there on the ship "Eagle." These newcomers had come overland from London looking for a better life in what was then an open-air country filled with forest, rivers, lakes and mountains. Most of these British settlers started out working on farmsteads or as mechanics until they could afford land of their own. Some also became traders or farmers before moving onto larger farms that included plantations near Cleveland where they grew crops and raised animals for leather exports and other markets around the world. The first residents of Tiffin were Englishmen specifically from Ipswich Suffolk, England who came overland aboard the ship "Eagle" on March 14th, 1814 along with their families and about 150 others including 12 men from Liverpool England who had married local women and moved westward to become farmers/weavers/carpetmakers etc., among others skills which they brought with them when they arrived hereabouts . By 1870 there were already 313 resident citizens (of whom 154 were male) with just 9 households total having 10-15 personal servants each (ensuring efficient management).
