One of the earliest home-based small batch coffee operations was operated by Mrs. Jane Weinreb in the early 2000s. Tallmadge, Ohio is home to the first small batch coffee company in the United States. The coffee was started by two friends, John and Jeanne Ostroff in 1978. The original recipe for their small batch coffee was called "The Star-Keeper."
Tallmadge is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Toledo Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Tallmadge is derived from the Shawnee word "talla" meaning "tall tree." The first settler in what is now Tallmadge was James Hance who arrived in 1798. He built a cabin on the edge of what is now town and named it Hancestown after his friend and neighbor, James Hance. In 1802, John McMillan settled near the present day intersection of State Street and Wabash Avenue and named his home Madison after President George Washington's favoritedaughter Madison County had been created in 1792 from portions of Muskingum and Delaware Counties. In 1807, David Dixon built a gristmill on the east side of State Road that became known as Dixon's Mill because it processed flour for local farmers. In 1840, John Aiken bought much of this mill site and renamed it Aiken's Mills after himself and his family. In 1876, Fenton Crouse erected an old hotel on Main Streets between Highways 10th & 11th Avenues which he called The Crystal Palace Hotel until 1902 when he sold it to Jules Lambertson who changed its name to The Bellefontaine Hotel shortly before his death in 1907. It wasn't until 1929 that Mrs Furness First organized her community into two villages: tallmadge-on-the-water (now within township limits) Ferrysburg lived on both sides of Rocksburg Creek while development began along US Route 6 north to Steubenville extending into today’s Scioto Township; Miamisburg resided just east of Rocksburg Creek within township limits but mostly developed along Centre Road inside Township Limits boundaries; finally Griggsburg lay just southwest of Rocksburg Creek within township limits but mainly developed along Trumbull Pike outside Township Limits boundaries with few residences located there until 1965 when residents acquired title to parcels extending all the way into Scioto Township by gift from their late father-in-law Irving Furness; these tracts were later reorganized as “Tallmadge Village”). Today most residents identify themselves with either Tallmadge or Ferrysburg although there are also some scattered residences scattered throughout neighboring townships such as Miamisburg proper and Griggsburgh within township boundaries

Tallmadge was founded in 1788 by George Washington and Major General James Wilkinson. The town was named after Major General John Tallmadge, who fought in the French and Indian War. In 1814, the village of Tallmadge was incorporated as a village by an act of the Ohio General Assembly. In 1830, President James K. Polk declared that Tallmadge had become a national city due to its growth in trade and industry. The population of Tallmadge peaked at over 10,000 in 1925 before slowly declining over the following decades. By 1970, only 1,500 people lived in Tallmadge proper and it lost its status as a national city until 2000. Today, tall madges retains some nostalgic memories among its citizens but is largely decline with limited employment opportunities and infrastructure problems. Despite this shortcoming, there are few negative aspects to life for those living within the small town located just north of Columbus on the Scioto River Valley.
