Tallmadge is a city in Northwest Ohio, United States. The population was 5,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Tallmadge were farmers and their families who arrived during the 1830s from Maryland and Virginia. They farmed in scattered lots around the small village on the Scioto River that was founded by John Adams Greenough and his family in 1836. One of these lots was given to Cornelius Wistar, an Englishman who had come to America to seek new opportunities and make a fortune as a speculator in land purchases. After buying this lot, Wistar laid out a town square with two churches, one small schoolhouse, four stores, three taverns (two of which still remain), one post office (opened in 1840), several residences (three of which are still standing), including White's Tavern and Gourd's Restaurant – all within walking distance of each other. By 1847 there were ten households living within five miles of Tallmadge: eight farms and two homes; six shops; two churches; one physician; one mill; three blacksmiths; one cooper shop; seven white residents earning wages or salaries outside the village limits. In 1850 there were twenty-one households living within five miles of Tallmadge: twenty-six farms and twelve homes; thirteen shops ; four churches ; six physicians ; four mills ; eleven blacksmiths ; nine cooper shops ; fifteen white residents earning wages or salaries outside the village limits . In 1852 local resident Amos Davenport opened Davenport's Store on Court Street near present day Lucas Avenue for general merchandise sales only. This store became a successful business until it burned down in 1886 after being built over an old coal mine shaft containing combustible coal material. The shaft still stands today adjacent to current day East Streetside Elementary School across from First National Bank on Delaware Avenue . In 1811, General David Dixon and his army passed through this area on their way to battle against Tecumseh.
