Tallmadge is a town in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the eight towns in Butler County by population. The first settler in Tallmadge was James Croom in 1810. There were no other arrivals until 1821 when Abel Hill and his family moved from Dyersburg, Tennessee to what is now Tallmadge. Hill's son David built a sawmill on the Scioto River in 1825 and became one of the early settlers of Tallmadge. He also became an early poll-taker and justice of the peace. In 1830, Daniel Kapp settled on a tract of land north of present day Tallmadge with his wife Martha Kapp and their children Samuel, Abraham and Sarah. They named their new community "Kappstown" after their father-in-law who had been earlier instrumental in helping them find land hereabouts. During this time, tall madges (a type of red maple) were becoming more common as garden vegetables due to cooler temperatures during winter months; however, there are still some standing tall madges around today which are used for decoration or fence posts around homes or schools yards! By 1840 most residents in Kappstown had left for unknown reasons including two generations of Kapps who had owned all but a small piece of original ground within present day Tallmadge Township boundaries...the rest being donated by various citizens to make way for public square/town square developments! One such donation was made by Jesse Fenton who donated 4 acres (1 hectare) along Third Street NW between Highways 422 and 424 west of town limits to help form what would become known as "Fenton Square". This acreage later housed the old High School building which was razed following its construction beginning on July 3rd 1921 - making it one hundred years old! Today you can see remnants including several large stone arches that once supported ceilings inside the building!
