Tallmadge is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the border of Western Pennsylvania and the Eastern Ohio Valley. The population was 10,622 at the 2000 census, making it the largest municipality in Summit County by population. It is part of the Akron-Canton-Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now Tallmadge was first inhabited by Native Americans who called it Wapakoneta or "the place where they hunted." The first Europeans to arrive in this area were French traders and fur trappers who traveled up the Great Lakes coast in search of trade goods with Native American nations such as the Potawatomi and Shawnee. In 1795, John Marshall moved his family from Pittsburgh to what is now Tallmadge after purchasing property there from Colonel James Caldwell for $1,000. He built a log cabin on a hilltop overlooking Clearwater Creek which he named Fort Marshall because he had received orders from George Washington to build a military post along this creek line to protect settlers coming overland from British forces. The first post office in this area was established at Fort Marshall on October 5, 1800. By 1813, Marshall had succeeded in getting Congress to pass an act giving him exclusive rights as proprietor of all land within limits defined by his post office location and named “Tallmadge Township”; thus beginning what would be a long history of settler growth hereabouts… In 1828, when Summit County became a part of Portage County (later Muskingum County), Fort Marshall became known as Muskingum Depot because steamboats used to docking there brought cargo downriver for shipment across Lake Erie into Cleveland and other cities on the peninsula… In 1861 when Union troops burned down Sweetgreen House (now part of Building A at Union Station) during their November attack upon Myer’s store located just east of today’s intersectionof Main Street/Route 422nd Avenueand Highland Road/US Route 422nd Avenue – one Oak Street west – fortification work around Depot began immediately cutting through tall trees near Depot so that artillery could be brought ashore without havingto go too close ashore…. Tallmadge is a town in Summit County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton–Bexley, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded on July 4, 1800 by George Washington and his band of Mounted Rifles as a Cavalry outpost on the edge of what is now Tallmadge Lake. The first settler in Tallmadge was John Tryon. Tryon built a cabin near where he now lives and named it "Tallmadge". In 1801, General James K. Polk sent Lieutenant Colonel Edward Halleck to explore the area and discovered that there were rich mineral deposits near present-day Tallmadge. Polk dispatched four men from Tallmadge to prospect for gold in nearby Licking County but all four died during their expedition. In 1815, John Tryon's son Michael founded the village of Tuscarawas (now Crescent City) about northeast of present-day Tallmadge lake with land he had acquired from the government for $2 per acre (0.50 km²). Tuscarawas incorporated as a municipality in 1870 and adopted its current name when it annexed most of neighboring Scioto Township that same year. In 1837, entrepreneur Solomon Wells established a small mill at what is now Westfield Shopping Center in downtown Tallmadge after locating lead mines around mile marker 21 on State Route 522 east of town center. Well's mill operated until 1861; however, lead mining continued until 1978 when an exhausted mine closed down nearby without ever yielding any valuable ore to be sold or mined again! The mill site still boasts several giant blocks of granite which remain standing today just outside tall madges limits! On January 12th 1915 local resident Maudie Greenlaw donated her home at 6551 Lorain Road NE for use as a schoolhouse for young girls attending local public schools adjacent to her farmstead known then as Maple Grove School District #5 which also included Crestview Heights School District #4 which shared property boundaries with both Maple Grove and Crestview Heights Schools until 1942 when they became separate districts due to increased enrollment within each district caused by World War II military activities across Summit County including how many children were born in 1940?
